Celebrating Our Teachers and Staff

Teachers and those involved in education play a special role in inspiring, supporting and encouraging our next generation. All of us can remember those moments where a teacher inspired us, lifted us to a better way of being through enabling us to grow new and deeper insights or skills, encouraged us when we were faced by disappointment or challenge and cared enough to have the difficult conversations when we had made poor choices.

We are blessed at Pacific to have a very talented and capable team of teachers and staff who are generous in giving of themselves to invest in the growth of our young people and their families. As staff engage, encourage, guide and walk with our young people, they are committed to provide best possible opportunities for our students. Our staff also engage strongly as learners themselves, bringing wonder, creativity and discernment into their practice. Through drawing on research and feedback our teachers and staff are continually evolving programs and opportunities and growing in capacity to work in partnership with young people and their families. We thank all our staff for growing a culture of hope and possibility filled with rich opportunities where people can flourish now and into the future.

Principal’s Log

We celebrate the achievement of our Future Problem Solving Team where fourteen of our Middle and Senior College students were selected to represent Queensland at the national championships in Melbourne. We congratulate all students and particularly Jessica Cronin who was named as the Champion in the Community Problem Solving Individual Middle College Division and Amy Richards who came 2nd in the Global Issues Problem Solving Middle College Division. Both students have been invited to compete in the International Conference in the United States next year. We congratulate all of the students involved and thank our staff of Mrs Linda Sydes, Mrs Jo Belchamber, Mr Rob Belchamber and Ms Adelle Byerlee for their leadership of our Future Problem Solving Teams.

We also congratulate our Year 5 and 6 Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers Team who have been selected to represent the region. They have been invited to compete in Brisbane against 13 other schools from across the state on 31st October. We congratulate Emma, Scarlett, and Louise and wish them all the best.

Our Arts students continue to be recognised for their talent. Four students had their works selected to be part of the North Coast Southern Exhibition of the 2024 Creative Generation Visual Art competition. This competition occurs across the state with 40 works being chosen to be part of the Creative Generation excellence awards in Visual Art exhibition at GOMA. Four works were selected from the Sunshine Coast Region to be part of the GOMA exhibition and then one student was awarded the Regional Encouragement Award and others received commendations. We congratulate Luca Buttrose on being awarded the Regional Encouragement award, and Erin Lacey and Ayrisa Jones for having their works selected to be part of this exhibition. Families can enjoy the exhibiton at the Cooroy Butter Factory Gallery until Sunday 27th October.

At this time of year, we have dual focus on finishing strongly as learners and celebrating the achievements of 2024 and looking forward to 2025.

The tender for the extension of the gym has now closed and we are in the final stages of working with architects and our project manager to confirm compliance of the tenders with the requirements of the project. Families may like to view the fly through of the new facility which will include 2 additional indoor courts for netball, basketball, and volleyball, a dance space, fitness gym and staff area and will function as a high quality sports stadium as well as a gathering place for our community for chapels, assembly and Information Evenings. We look forward to confirming changes that will come with this exciting new construction, as the building contract is finalised.

As we look forward to 2025, we are very pleased to announce that Mr Andrew Doyle will be the Head of Mathematics from the start of 2025. Mr Doyle has extensive experience in teaching all levels of mathematics across Years 7-12 including leadership experience in leading Mathematics educators within Education Queensland. We also look forward to welcoming new staff to our Mathematics and Science team. Mrs Wydell comes to us from St Monica’s Catholic College, Cairns and is a QCAA Endorser for Chemistry and an External Marker for Chemistry and Maths Methods. Mrs Wydell also led the establishment of ‘Radical Maths’ which were short preparation programs for Year 11 and 12 Maths Methods students offered through James Cook University in Cairns. We also look forward to welcoming Mrs Jana Sajtos-Hobbs who has been Head of Mathematics at the Grace Lutheran College Caboolture and is a QCAA Confirmer and Marker for General Maths and Mr Adam Burton from Caloundra City Private School who has previously been a member of a QCAA Maths C panel. We look forward to the leadership and contribution of these very passionate, capable, and experienced educators to our College community.

As a new role we will also be appointing a Head of Student Engagement Senior College from the start of 2025. This role will have the focus on supporting senior student engagement, connection and leadership. The role will include supporting the growth of social emotional and leadership capacities and encourage the optimisation of engagement with all dimensions of College life. This new role will absorb and extend the role of Head of Senior School Students currently held as a dual role by our Director of Students. From 2025 the Director of Students role will be redefined as the Director of Student Engagement. Ms Finter as Director of Student Engagement will have a more strategic focus on the development of programs to enhance leadership, connection, engagement  and development of students as per our 2023-2026 Strategic Plan.

We congratulate and celebrate the appointment of our 2025 House Captains. We wish them all the best as they take on roles of student leadership with their houses this term and into 2025.

We celebrate the strength, capability and commitment of our staff to providing best possible opportunities for our young people. We thank our staff for their generosity of spirit and heart for young people and thank God for the many blessings they bring into our lives and this community. We pray that God would continue to hold them in his care and give them a sense of joy.

Role-modelling Christ’s Love

We have been exploring the importance of positive role models in chapels and devotions over the past two weeks. The story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-32 has always been a favourite passage of mine, as its message is such a powerful reminder to us all about God’s unconditional love, but it also highlights the crucial role of parents and other role models in the lives of children. In the parable, the father’s role is often overlooked, I believe, as the focus of the story is typically the lessons learnt by the son. Essentially, the father welcomes his wayward son back with open arms, embodying grace, patience, and forgiveness – not an easy thing to do when someone has hurt you as badly as his son has. However, I’m sure that as parents, you all understand the immense responsibility not only to guide your own children but to model these same virtues to others in your community. But on top of that, there is also an immeasurable unconditional love that comes with raising your children.

Parents, coaches, teachers, and mentors can all be role models impacting on children’s’ lives. Children and young people often look to the adults in their lives to shape their understanding of the world and how they should behave. Just like the father in the story of the prodigal son, adult role models are called not only to correct mistakes but to love, forgive, and nurture. The father’s patience with his son’s poor choices mirrors the patience you are called to have as parents, allowing room for our children to grow and sometimes fail, while still knowing they are deeply loved.

There are many lessons we can learn from the story of the prodigal son. As parents, there is a time to let go and allow your children to discover life lessons for themselves, trusting in the work you’ve done and in God’s plan. Your influence, like the father’s, may not always be immediately visible, but your love and wisdom will resonate over time. There is also a time for forgiveness and compassion when they realise that they made a wrong choice. All these lessons help guide them into becoming the people they are destined to become.

Ultimately, the story of the Prodigal Son reflects God’s boundless love for us as His children. At the end of the story, we see the father run to greet his son upon his return. He doesn’t just wait there for the son to approach him with his tail between his legs – he runs to greet the son who has returned home! This is a symbol of how God runs to us with open arms, no matter where we’ve been or what we’ve done. And as parents, your role in shaping your children’s lives is one of the greatest callings you have. But you are not alone. We are blessed that, through all we go through, God’s love will always be with us, guiding us and showing us that He is the ultimate role model for our lives.

Being Champions for Each Other

Over the past four weeks, during Year 6-12 Chapel and Pastoral Care Group devotions, students have been reflecting on the importance of boundaries and positive modelling from adults. These discussions have focused on understanding what’s in bounds and out of bounds when it comes to behaviour—how rules and consequences are essential, but also how adults in our lives care enough to follow through, challenging and inspiring us to be our best. This foundation of trust and guidance from role models encourages us all to consider how we can support each other in meaningful ways.

Being a champion for someone else means stepping up when others need help, offering encouragement, or standing up for what is right. Just as the adults in students’ lives model positive behaviours, PLC students too can take responsibility for creating a supportive and caring environment.

There are many opportunities to be a champion in students’ daily interactions. It could be something small, like noticing when someone is having a tough day and offering a kind word, or something bigger, like supporting a friend who's facing a challenge. The important thing is that students are not just bystanders; they are active participants in contributing to making our Pacific community a place where everyone feels valued and supported.

Students were provided opportunities during PCG to reflect and discuss the lessons of boundaries, rules, and positive role models.  During chapel, they were also encouraged to think about how they can apply these principles in their own friendships and relationships. In reflection, as community, when we lift others up, we help them believe in themselves and what they can achieve. Whether it’s in the classroom, or on the sporting field, or in social settings, being a champion for others can inspire positive change.

Moving into Week 5, students are asked to consider the following: How can I be a champion for someone else? How can I make sure that my actions reflect the care, dignity and respect for myself, others and community?

By doing this, we not only provide opportunity for social and emotional growth but also opportunity to build a stronger, more connected College community.

Celebrating Connections: Class of 2014 Alumni Reunion

This past Saturday, 19th October, the College welcomed back our Class of 2014 alumni for a lunch reunion and a tour of the campus. Led by Dr. Bronwyn Dolling and members of our staff, the alumni had the chance to reconnect with their peers, reflect on their time at Pacific, and witness how the College has evolved since they graduated.  Acknowledgements to Mrs Jodi Neilsen, Administration and Communications Officer for her organisation of the lunch and 2014 alumni, Mr Brendan West for his role in reaching out to other graduates and co-ordination.

Events like these serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining strong connections with our alumni community. Reunions offer alumni the opportunity to reconnect with each other, but they also provide a valuable chance to renew their ties with the College itself.

Our alumni represent a vital part of Pacific’s ongoing story. Their experiences and achievements post-graduation offer invaluable insights and opportunities that can contribute to the future growth of the College. Whether it’s through sharing career wisdom, mentoring current students, or supporting College initiatives, alumni have much to offer in shaping the next generation of leaders and thinkers.

The strategic aim of growing alumni support is not just about maintaining connections for social purposes, but about tapping into the wealth of knowledge and experiences our graduates have gained. Their perspectives can inspire future projects and innovations that will benefit both the College and its community. By involving alumni in future development, we strengthen the sense of belonging and continuity, ensuring that our students, staff, and the broader College community feel part of something bigger.

As we continue to engage our alumni, we invite them to share their journeys and contribute in ways that foster a deeper sense of connection and community. Whether it’s through returning for events like this reunion or participating in new initiatives, their involvement is a key component in Pacific’s ongoing success. Together, we can build a future where past, present, and future students remain connected and invested in the growth and vibrancy of our College community.

Celebrating Our Staff

This week's thread of Adult Role Models celebrates the adults who challenge and inspire young people to do their best. It lends itself to celebrating our amazing P-5 Staff this Friday on World Teachers Day.

No matter how old we are, all of us can remember a teacher they remember fondly during their schooling. Often, it is someone who showed care and humanity when we were in need; others may possess a unique gift of explaining a complex learning moment simply and effectively that switched the metaphorical light on for us. Perhaps the greatest gift a teacher possesses is to care enough to deliver feedback that may be uncomfortable for us to hear, but in reflection, we know that without that advice, we would not be where we are today.

When I reflect on the teachers I remember, it is always around what that connection looked and felt like. As the saying goes, “People will not remember what you did or achieved, but rather, how they made you feel”.

One of the joys of working with professionals who have chosen to work in an educational setting is the front-row seat to all situations mentioned. At PLC, we are blessed to have caring and committed staff who are invested in their profession and embody the values of the College and Lutheran Education. Compassion, forgiveness, and humility are among our staff's daily guiding values.

The greatest gift we can impart is a positive legacy or a moment of growth. Thank you to our teaching staff, who live this vision daily.

Right Place, Right Time, Right Plan.

With Day for Daniel taking place this Friday, I addressed our collective responsibility for safety in and around the College at this week's assembly.

Students were reminded that staff supervision begins at the College at 8.00am and when arriving before this time, it places student safety at risk. Staff are also present at exits to the College from 3.00pm until 3.30pm.

Our uniform and how it is worn also tells us how we perceive ourselves. Students were prompted that their responsibility extends to wearing their uniform with pride as well as arriving and leaving the college with their hats in place.

With Day for Daniel on Friday, students are encouraged to wear a touch of red to honour the legacy of Danel Morcombe as well as a timely reminder about the behaviours that keep children safe and promote education around who the safe people in their circle care and how they are able to care and protect us.

Years 2 and Year 4 Learning Excursions

Last week, I was fortunate to attend not one but two learning opportunities off campus.

Year 2 attended the Ginger Factory, which investigated their Teaching for Understanding Unit of Places, Produce, and Processes. Students explored the paddock to plate the ginger plant. They are now busy in their learning spaces, building on their learning from the day through English, Science and HASS KLA’s.

Year 4 visited Aussie World as part of their Amusing Science Unit, where students were privileged to be spoken to about the forces involved in the rides at Aussie World. Students are now tasked with using their acquired knowledge to design and build their own rides using the Spike Lego Robotics Kits.

Both groups represented our college positively in the community, and we look forward to learning and growing as a result of these days. Thank you to our teachers for their planning prior to and on the day.

Year 9 Outdoor Education

We were excited to welcome back our Year 9 students last Friday after their two week outdoor learning experience. The Year 9 Outdoor Education program offered a chance for students to enhance their personal development, interpersonal skills, and environmental awareness. These action-packed weeks included a supported expedition aimed at building decision-making skills and fostering community connections. Students embraced the variety of activities and adapted remarkably well to changing circumstances. A special thank you to Mr Paul Brace, Head of Outdoor Education, for coordinating the program, and to all the teachers and support staff who contributed.

Day for Daniel

On the 25th October 2024, the Day for Daniel will be recognised in schools across the Sunshine Coast and increasingly, across the state and country. It is a time to acknowledge the potential threats to our community and educate our students on ways to keep them safe.

Fortunately, examples of actual harm to our children in their neighbourhoods are rare, and our communities' connection is strong. Unfortunately, many of us are aware of the devastating impact that the disappearance of Daniel Morcombe had on his family and the community in general. In the passing years, his family have fought hard to make sure that his memory will live on through the foundation and every year, the child safety message is communicated.

The foundation website, https://danielmorcombe.com.au/  has many resources about how we may equip our children to understand and read signs that aim to keep them safe. These resources are age-appropriate and cover a range of topics and I encourage you to peruse them and discuss their contents with your children.

2024 National Future Problem Solving Champions

Two students from Pacific Lutheran College’s Pacific Plus program recently excelled at the National Future Problem Solving Competition in Melbourne. Jessica Cronin, Year 8 student, received the title of 2024 Champion in the Community Problem Solving Individual Middle College Division, while Year 9 student, Amy Richards secured 2nd place in the Global Issues Problem Solving Middle College Division. Jessica’s award acknowledged the success of her 2030 in Focus project, while Amy prepared a six-step problem solving booklet, including an action plan, in response to a scenario focused on autonomous transport in the future. As a result of their remarkable accomplishments, both students have been invited to attend the International Conference in the United States next year.

This year, Pacific Plus students across Years 6-11 participated in the Global Issues Problem Solving section of the Future Problem Solving (FPS) Competition, exploring the future challenges of Tourism, Urbanisation, Antarctica and Autonomous Transport.

Using the FPS model, Year 7 Pacific Plus participants also took part in this year’s Community Problem Solving program, formulating proposals for projects to tackle issues within the local community. All students demonstrated the characteristics of effective problem solvers, showing skills of futuristic thinking, innovation, divergent thinking and analytical research.

Student projects included the Travel Buddies who sewed toys, that are available for students to borrow from the library during extended absences, the Litter Leaders promoted the importance of keeping the College grounds tidy for Koda, our Pacific Wellbeing dog, and Peaceful Pathways, a group of Middle College students who recognised that students experience increased stress during assessment periods, leading them to create strategies for breaks throughout lessons.

We congratulate all Pacific students who attended and participated in the Future Problem Solving Competition, which provided a valuable learning experience for everyone involved.

Pacific Alumni 10 Year Reunion

On Saturday afternoon, we had the pleasure of reconnecting with our 2014 Graduate Pacific Alumni. The energy in the room was palpable as former students and staff came together. We loved hearing about their journeys since leaving Pacific, sharing laughs while reminiscing and engaging in meaningful discussions on various topics. A heartfelt thank you to all the alumni who attended and to our teachers for their support throughout the day. It was truly an uplifting experience for everyone involved.

Year 5 News

2024 has been an incredible year of growth and collaboration for our Year 5 co-hort.  One of their projects in-house has been the completion of their art wall.  Taking the idea from Dr Dolling's signature frog images this year and along with teacher support, the students gridded the image into 30cm squares and then independently completed the square they selected.

Although not a perfect replication, the students were proud to display their names to the right of the image, which evolved into almost a patchwork painting. Their collaboration, support and sharing of skills was a delight to witness and we think their wall of Curiosity, Wonder and Discernment is a wonderful legacy to leave for the upcoming co-hort. A special mention needs to go to Jessica C, who showed and shared her art capabilities throughout the process, encouraging and supporting her peers.

Rugby

Congratulations to our U14’s and U16’s teams who had their fixtures last night and continued to demonstrate excellent Rugby spirit. Our U14A girls had an exceptional showing, winning both their games against Grammar and St Andrews. The U14B girls unfortunately went down in both their fixtures, however should be proud of their enthusiasm and enjoyment they showed in their games. Our U14 boys continued to improve across the night, with a tight margin loss against Grammar in their final game. Our U16A boys are undefeated so far this season, posting convincing wins against NCC, SCC, GCC and GSLC, well done boys! Our U16B boys had a good opportunity to mesh together as a team and are starting to play more and more cohesively. Finally, our U16 girls improved incredibly across the night, with a large portion of the team brand new to Rugby, it was fantastic to watch them grow in confidence and skill. Thanks again to all our teacher, student and parent supporters across the night who are always actively involved and continue to contribute to positive culture at our games.
