Compass No 747 - January 2025

From the Principal

Seeing Each Other As Co-Creators and Co-Learners

As we come into community, we are invited to see each other as co-creators and co-learners. In every moment of every day, the choices we make, create our experiences. How we choose to see ourselves, each other, success, challenges, opportunity, change and uncertainty, create a present and a future for ourselves and others. Where we come as co-creators and co-learners, we are open to wonder and curiosity, being creative and then discerning in our choices. When we see each other as co-creators we listen deeply with ears, eyes and heart.  We create space to see and build on our strengths and the strengths of those around us to shape better experiences now and into the future. We slow down and engage more deeply. We see and become more.

God invites us to see ourselves and each other as He sees us, as having been specially and uniquely created each with our own gifts and purpose to make a difference for people and the world around us. He invites us to co-create with Him and each other. We are invited to walk graciously, learning through success and mistake-making. Empowered by His love and grace we are enabled to flourish as hope-filled co-creators, enriching the lives of each other and the planet for both the present and the future.

Principal’s Log

Welcome to the start of the 2025 school year. We look forward an exciting year co-creating together. A particularly warm welcome to our new students, their families and new staff. It has been great to feel the energy as staff, students and parents have connected with each other throughout this week.

Each year, our Commencement Services enable us to come together in God’s presence to begin the process of growing as community with common purpose. The installation of new staff, rededication of continuing staff and installation, badging and recognition of student leaders was a special point of celebration within the Year 6-12 Service. We thank Pastor Ray Morris for leading the installation of staff and student leaders and his message. We thank Mrs Michiko Hauser for her leadership and organisation, our musicians for their talented performances and our backstage crew who all contributed to making it a memorable and meaningful event. We thank staff, students and parents for your part in shaping a strong celebration. We look forward to our Prep to Year 5 Commencement Service tomorrow and thank Chaplain Mr Mark Hauser, Mr Damian Davis and Mrs Sue Zweck for their leadership and organisation of the Prep to Year 5 Service.

We thank our Administration, Information Technology, Finance, Uniform and Grounds teams, and senior leaders who worked hard over the holiday break to provide a smooth start to the school year. Many people have commented on the considerable work that took place in the grounds and maintenance area. Work included the upgrade of the J block toilets and changerooms with individual cubicles being built into the J block changerooms. We look forward to working together with Middle and Senior College students to plan for the refurbishment of S block toilets and changerooms this semester.

Teachers and support staff valued the opportunity to collaborate in their planning last week to provide rich learning experiences for our students. Teachers joined with many of our continuing students to welcome new students to the College last Friday. We thank our staff and students for their commitment to enhancing the quality of experience for our community.

This week we farewell Mrs Julie McCosker, who has very capably led our Early Learning Centre (ELC) and Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) teams since 2015. Together with her team, she has created an environment that has given the youngest members of our community the best possible start. Her care for our little people and their families and heart for seeing children grow as happy and capable people and learners made a difference for many. Julie has led tremendous growth in both the ELC and OSHC and worked with staff to shape a culture of learning that promotes curiosity, connection, creativity and confidence. Senior students have also valued Mrs McCosker’s support and input as they have gained early childhood qualifications through working in the ELC.  Mrs McCosker can be proud of the growth she has led and we express our deepest appreciation to her. We wish Julie every blessing for the future.

We wish our Year 8 students all the best for their Year 8 Outdoor Education experience. We look forward to connecting with parents at the Middle College and Junior College Information Evenings on Monday and Wednesday evening next week, and our Year 11 parents and students at the Year 11 Information Evening.

We thank God for the people, gifts and talents He has brought into our community. We pray that He would walk with us as we co-create with hope and possibility together.

From the Director of Student Engagement

2025 Engagement, Wellbeing and Communication

Student Engagement and Wellbeing as our Focus

As we continue to prioritise student engagement and wellbeing, I am excited that the roles of Director of Students, Head of Students Middle College, Head of Students Senior College and Head of Staff and P-5 Students have been redefined to be Director of Student Engagement and Heads of Student Engagement. The purposeful addition of this reflects our College’s commitment to co-creating a learning environment where each student feels connected, valued, and supported.

Student engagement is central to fostering a positive College culture and enabling success in all areas of school life. Whether in the classroom, during co-curricular activities, or through intentional pastoral care activities, our commitment is to ensure students are engaging purposefully with a focus on growing learning capacity and social and emotional capabilities.

This renewed focus on student engagement and wellbeing aligns with the College’s Strategic Plan and is supported by current research that brings into the spotlight that engaged students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. I look forward to working with staff, students, and our PLC families to strengthen connections and grow opportunities that empower all our students to flourish.

Update to Mobile Phone Procedure- Supporting Student Engagement and Wellbeing

In today’s connected world, mobile phones are a key part of our daily lives, offering convenience, communication, and learning opportunities. However, their use in schools needs to be carefully managed to ensure that students remain engaged, focused, and supported in their learning and wellbeing.

At Pacific, our mobile phone procedure sits within the e-Smart and Social Media Policy for Students and aims to enhance student connection and engagement, promote healthy habits and develop wellbeing, minimise distractions and foster a purposeful learning environment.

As per the update:

Mobile phones, headphones or ear buds are not to be seen during the school day from 8:00am until the end of the school day.  To assist this, phones brought to school by Junior College students and 6-12 students are to be kept secure in lockers or bags at the owner’s own risk.

We acknowledge that mobile phones can, at times, serve as valuable learning tools. In situations where they enhance the learning experience, classroom teachers may incorporate phones into their lesson plans. When this occurs, it will be clearly communicated to students by the teacher. Outside of these directed uses, mobile phones should remain stored away. Similarly, headphones or earbuds are only to be used when explicitly directed by a teacher.

Mobile Phones During Excursions and off-campus activities

While off-campus, including during excursions students are required to store their mobile phones securely in their bags or lockers. Phones are not to be used during these times to ensure that students remain fully engaged with the activities, their peers, and the experience itself. Teachers will provide specific instructions where necessary, and communication needs during these activities should be managed by staff.

Parent and Student Communication

To ensure streamlined communication throughout the day, any messages between parents and students should be directed through the relevant school offices. This is especially important in the case of health concerns or other urgent matters.

Tuckshop Purchases

For tuckshop purchases, Junior College students are required to use pre-paid Flexischools accounts. Students in Years 6-12 must either pre-order through Flexischools or use a pre-paid card, such as a Flexischools card, student ID card, or debit card.

By setting clear expectations for our students, we aim to create an engaged and connected learning environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

The College thanks all community members for your cooperation and support in upholding these guidelines as we continue to prioritise the wellbeing and success of our students.

Ms Leigh Finter, Director of Student Engagement

From the Head of Learning K-5

Welcome to 2025

Welcome to an exciting new school year! As we step into 2025, we embrace the theme “Co-creating Better Futures”—a powerful call to action that invites every member of our school community to collaborate, dream, and build a brighter tomorrow.

This theme reminds us that education is more than academic learning; it’s about shaping the future we want to see. By fostering curiosity, resilience, and independence in our students, we empower them to navigate challenges, embrace opportunities, and make meaningful contributions to the world around them.

At Pacific, we are committed to providing an inclusive, dynamic, and engaging learning environment. In 2025, we will continue to focus on:

•          Personalised Learning: Ensuring each child has the support to achieve their best.

•          The Australian Curriculum Version 9: Delivering high-quality learning aligned with national standards.

•          Building Critical Capabilities: Encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork to prepare students for the future.

•          Strong Partnerships: Strengthening relationships between families, teachers, and the community to support student success.

As partners in learning, we look forward to collaborating with you throughout the year. Together, we will celebrate milestones, reflect on growth, and encourage our students to strive for excellence.

To our returning families, welcome back! To those joining us for the first time—we are thrilled to have you as part of our vibrant school community. Let’s make 2025 a year of learning, connection, and growth.

Counselling and Student Support in 2025

We hope that you all have enjoyed a restful and recharging holiday break. It was so great this week to chat with students about their holiday adventures and experiences, as well as their hopes and goals for the 2025 school year. Our counselling team have had a few changes over the holiday break, which we have highlighted for you below:

Our Team

Our counselling team has grown over the holiday break, with the addition of Mrs Kelsie Munroe as a Middle Years Counsellor (fulltime) and Mrs Sara Taverner as a Junior College Counsellor (part-time).

Mrs Sara Taverner will provide counselling services in addition to her role as the Head of Learning Enrichment for P-5. As a qualified Counsellor Mrs Taverner, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team, and we are very excited to have her on board in 2025. Mrs Leanne Groll will be joining our Learning Enrichment team as a P-5 Learning Enrichment Teacher (part time).

Mrs Kelsie Munroe joins us with a focus on supporting students in the middle years. Kelsie is passionate about supporting students' personal, social, and emotional development, and her goal is to create a safe environment where students feel comfortable to be themselves and grow. Kelsie uses a pluralistic framework to adapt to diverse needs with various approaches, including person-centred, strengths-based, solution-focused, and expressive arts therapy. Kelsie will be based in the Wellbeing Centre and is very excited to begin working with our middle years students.

Appointments and Referrals

There have been some changes to our appointment making and referral processes for 2025. Our ongoing goal is to ensure that both students and families are getting the best support possible while here at PLC. If your child is receiving counselling, psychological, medical, or even learning support outside of school, please let our team know so that we can ensure your child is also supported here at school and able to thrive throughout their schooling journey.

• Junior College – first point of contact should be your child’s classroom teacher, who will refer to Mrs Taverner if/when required.

• Middle and Senior College – first point of contact should be your child’s PCG teacher and/or Head of House. The PCG teacher and/or Head of House will refer your child to the counselling team for further support if required.

Confidentiality and Information Sharing

Please know that as a counselling team, our ongoing goal is to have students and parents collaborating towards a successful outcome for your student. It is important to note that parental permission is required for students in our Junior College to engage in support from our counsellors, but once in the Middle and Senior Colleges, students are able to speak with our counsellors without parental consent. This process empowers students to advocate for their own wellbeing by making independent and developmentally appropriate decisions to seek support when they need it.

Our counselling team is looking forward to another fantastic year in 2025 and are extremely grateful for the support we get from parents, caregivers, and our staff.

Be kind to each other!

Mr Brendan Macaulay, Head of Student Support, Mrs Kelsie Munroe, Middle Years Counsellor  and Mrs Sara Taverner, Learning Enrichment P -5 & Counsellor

Important Reminder: Car Park Safety and Speed Limits

As our building works continue, we have noticed an increase in congestion within the College car parks, especially during drop-off and pick-up times, we kindly ask for your cooperation in ensuring the safety of all students during these busy times.

Speed Limit Reminder:

There is a speed limit of 10km/h within all College car parks. This is to help ensure the safety of students who may be moving between vehicles, riding bikes, or walking to the college and through the area. We ask that you please always adhere to this speed limit.

Drop-off Zones:

Please avoid parking in the designated drop-off zones, particularly on the prep or eastern side of the car park. Parking in these zones causes increased congestion, as other parents may need to stop on the roadway to drop off or pick up their children. This can create delays and, more importantly, poses safety risks.

Driver Conduct:

Drivers are also reminded to follow all signage, road markings, and the instructions of staff on duty. By doing so, we can help ensure that our car parks remain as safe and efficient as possible for everyone.

We greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation in keeping our students safe. Your assistance makes a significant difference in creating a secure environment for our school community. Thank you for your continued support.

Mrs Brooke Elsum, Workplace Health and Safety Officer

Sport News

Year 7 – 12 Sport

A big welcome from the Sport Department for the 2025 school year and we hope to see many of our students enjoying all the sport opportunities on offer at PLC this year.

Introduction Information:

A lot of our initial sport information has been sent out last week. This would have included an introduction letter with lots of information regarding sport at PLC, as well as some further correspondence about representative sport. In 2025, the PLC Sports Department will use Parent Lounge via TASS (https://tass.pacluth.qld.edu.au/parentlounge ) to collect consent for sport activities and will complete sign ons and disperse team information and scheduling for all sporting activities via Clipboard.

The weekly newsletter Compass will also be used to pass on information regarding upcoming sporting opportunities and events, as well as competitive sport results updates and celebrations of student sporting achievements. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if your student has achieved highly in an outside school sport event and we will endeavour to acknowledge them in the weekly newsletter.

Competitive Sport:

Students will have the opportunity to sign up and participate in a number of competitive sport teams throughout the year. These teams play outside of school hours, generally on a weekday afternoon/early evening. We encourage all students to play in at least one competitive sport team per semester in order to maximise their engagement (and enjoyment) within the school community (as a plus, they will have a lot of fun). All competitive sport sign ups are done online via the Clipboard link which will be available to students on the My PLC Portal and the Year 7-12 Sport NAV Page. Students will be told in advance about signing up and it is a very quick procedure to access a sign up portal. If there are any issues with signing up, they should contact a member of the Sport Department.

Students in competitive teams will be provided with playing shirts/singlets/jerseys/ dresses throughout the year. It is important to note that these are loaned to students just for the duration of the season and need to be returned at the conclusion of the season, otherwise there will be a fee charged for any unreturned items.

Weekly Friday Sport:

Each week students from Year 7-12 will participate in sporting activities on a Friday afternoon. These activities range from competitive sport training, sport development sessions for upcoming competitive sports, and sport for life options which provide students with a variety of physical activity and movement opportunities. Students only ever need to choose their competitive sports or development options in a term. Students who wish to participate in non competitive sports on a Friday will be allocated to activities with their year level peers.
