Gifting A Life of Positive Purpose

When young people are immersed in a community where adults readily give of their time to enhance learning and opportunities they not only gain from these experiences but also absorb what it is to live a positive purposeful life. Much of what young people learn is through who we are and what we do rather than what we say. Important lessons in respectful relationships, resilience and care for people and the environment flow from the way adults respond to challenges and interact with people and the environment. People of all ages gain inspiration from people within families and communities. Reading, listening and watching the stories of people who make positive contributions into their circle of influence lifts us to a higher way of being. Reflection and dialogue that acknowledges and highlights the hard work, care, resilience, patience, humility and service given helps to build both gratitude and a sense of purpose.

Seeing ourselves and each person as uniquely gifted and specially created for good purpose by a God who cares for and loves us, empowers us to make a positive difference through using our gifts in service to others. Through God’s love and grace, we learn to walk graciously together through challenges building capacity to find better ways of being.  In doing so we are constantly gifting and breathing positive purpose into our world.

Principal’s Log

Positive purposefulness was clearly evident, as staff and students welcomed and engaged with new and continuing students and parents as part of the Year 6 and 7 2025 Orientation Day. The thoughtfulness, care and attention that went into the planning and the leadership of activities and experiences ensured that the day provided good opportunities for our 2025 Year 6 and 7 students to develop connections and insights into the next phase of learning. Students enjoyed a variety of learning experiences in the classroom and group activities. Parents embraced the opportunity to connect and learn as they heard presentations about Pacific’s approach to learning and interacted with key leaders as part of a new expo style information session in the evening. We thank our Year 6 and 7 2025 students for the energy and enthusiasm they shared, our parents for their engagement and our staff for the care, creativity and expertise they shared on the day. We particularly thank Mrs Jo Belchamber and Mr Brett Kersnovske for the organisation and leadership of such a successful day.

We congratulate our large contingent of Future Problem Solving students who have been selected to compete in the National Finals in Melbourne this weekend. Students have been selected in individual categories as well as in the team events that focus on generating community based initiatives or solutions to problems humanity will face in the future. We wish the following students all the best; Isla Lendrum, Amy Richards, Evie Schenck, Lara Richards, Madeleine Costello, Zara Cammack, Evie Weule, Sophia Biddle, Macey McFadden, Georgia McFadden, Anita Iredia, Jessica Murphy, Kiarah Whitbread, and Jessica Cronin. A particular thank you to Mrs Linda Sydes, Mrs Jo Belchamber and Ms Adelle Byerlee for their generous and expert leadership of these students.

Our Year 11 students and their parents benefitted from the insights provided by our Head of Learning Senior College, Ms Anne-Marie Gerlach, our Head of Career Development, Mrs Veronica Sanmarco and Director of Students, Ms Leigh Finter at the Year 12 2025 Information Evening held this week. Students and parents valued learning about ways to maximise their learning experiences within and beyond the classroom and the different methods of accessing future pathways. We wish our 2025 Year 12 students all the best as they continue to develop capacities, dispositions and ways of being that enable them to flourish now and into the future. We thank Ms Gerlach, Mrs Sanmarco and Ms Leigh Finter.

We are excited to announce that three of our Year 12 students from the Film, Television and New Media program have been recognised as finalists in the prestigious Bond University Film and Television Awards (BUFTA). Priya Miles has been shortlisted in the animation category, Hunter Smith in the Art and Film category and Kai Sorbello in the Experimental category. Each of these talented students has made it to the top 45 finalists, showcasing their exceptional creativity and hard work in their learning this year. Their outstanding submissions not only highlight their artistic skills but also provides them with the incredible opportunity to compete for a full scholarship for a film degree at Bond University, valued at $100,000. We extend our congratulations to Priya, Hunter and Kai for their achievement and wish them well as the BUFTA advances into the next rounds.

We give a prayer of thanks for the generosity of spirit that flows through our staff, students and parents. We pray that we might continue to grow as people of positive purposefulness in all our circles of influence.

Middle College Orientation Day and Information Evening

This week we hosted our Middle College Orientation Day, which proved to be a productive experience for both current and new students entering Years 6 and 7 next year. This orientation offered valuable opportunities for students to connect and familiarise themselves with the next stage of their learning journey at Pacific.

Students engaged in various activities, exploring different subjects, conducting science experiments, making sushi, and collaborating in House groups. They also enjoyed activities on the oval, delved into Drama, Music, English and Japanese.

The extra time for connection during morning tea and lunch was a highlight, topped off by musical performances outside the library. A big thank you to all students for their enthusiastic participation. It was a fantastic day filled with connection and learning, and we hope it provided a glimpse of what's to come next year!

Thank you to parents for their valuable contributions to the Parent Evening on Tuesday night. We look forward to continued engagement into 2025.

Understanding Motivation: Empowering Our Children to Thrive

Understanding what motivates our children can significantly impact their academic success and overall well-being. Motivation is a complex interplay of various factors and recognising that different individuals are driven by different things can help us support our children more effectively.

Types of Motivation

Motivation generally falls into two categories: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation comes from within and is fuelled by personal satisfaction or interest. For example, a child may love reading because they enjoy the stories and the thrill of exploring new worlds. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is influenced by external factors, such as rewards or recognition. A student might work hard to achieve high grades to earn praise from parents or teachers.

Recognising Individual Differences

Every child is unique in what inspires them. Here are some common motivators and strategies to nurture them:

1.    Goals and Achievements: Many children are motivated by setting and achieving goals. Encourage your child to set realistic, attainable goals, both short-term and long-term. Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small, to reinforce their efforts and boost their confidence.

2.    Passion and Interests: Engage your child in activities that align with their interests. Whether it’s sports, music, art, or science, nurturing their passions can lead to greater motivation. Allow them to explore these interests freely and provide resources to help them delve deeper.

3.    Social Connections: For some children, the desire to belong and connect with peers can be a strong motivator. Create opportunities for your child to collaborate with classmates on projects or join clubs and teams. These social interactions can foster a sense of belonging and encourage them to engage more fully in their studies.

4.    Positive Reinforcement: Recognising effort and progress can significantly boost motivation. Use positive reinforcement, such as praise, rewards, or a simple acknowledgment of their hard work. This can help them associate effort with positive outcomes.

5.    Autonomy and Choice: Giving children a degree of choice in their learning can enhance their intrinsic motivation. Whether it’s choosing a book to read or selecting a project topic, allowing them to make decisions fosters ownership of their learning experience.

Understanding what motivates your child is essential in supporting their educational journey. By recognising their unique drives and implementing tailored strategies, we can help them find joy in learning and encourage a lifelong love of knowledge.

Let’s work together to create an environment where our children feel empowered and motivated to reach their full potential!

Take care of each other

Rugby News

Last night we continued with a strong competition amongst both our Rugby girls and boys teams. Our U18 girls competed at Peregian against some strong Nambour Christian College, Flinders and Grammar teams. The girls showed excellent improvement each week and had some narrow victories and losses, a great effort! Our U13 boys and girls continued their strong run in the competition, with the boys going undefeated against Grammar and St Andrews and the girls posting some convincing wins and a narrow loss. Our U14 boys had some tough opposition, with some absent players due to year 9 camp, however it’s great to see a few individuals rise to the occasion. Finally, our U14 girls A and B teams continued their run of dominance with our U14B’s continuing their undefeated streak in the season and our U14A girls continuing with 2 wins against Immanuel and Glass-House and unfortunately going down to a strong Flinders team. All players should be proud of their efforts and I look forward to the continued growth at the remaining rounds at Kawana.
