Breathing in Christmas

I wonder where your mind went, when you read the title "Breathing in Christmas". Some people in looking ahead to all that needs to be done in the preparation for and attending of Christmas gatherings and events might have thought along the lines of, “I hope to be able to have the time to breathe”.

Contrary to our often busy approach to Christmas, God invites us to be still and to breathe in His spirit of love and peace. The simplicity of the baby in a manager invites us to pause and reflect on God’s tremendous love for us. God comes to us in ways unexpected and often unseen. Over this Christmas period, our hope is that you see God’s love for you in the still moments, in the moments of connecting with family and friends, in the joy of connecting with nature and in experiences filled with fun. Our prayer is that you breathe in and are refreshed and renewed by God’s love, grace and peace.

Principal’s Log

Both of our End of Year Services, have celebrated the tremendous learning and growth that has occurred over the year. In these services, we have reflected on the centrality of wonder, creativity and discernment in enabling us to flourish as young people and as adults. Our sense of self, our relationships with each other, the planet and with God, our motivation and capacity to engage as learners and to live with purpose are strengthened through our capacity to engage our curiosity, bring wonder into our reflections, to be creative and to be discerning. These dispositions enhance our wellbeing, our ability to live as whole people connected and contributing, and our engagement with leisure and work.

When we reflect over the year that has been, we have lived and learnt best where we have brought a sense of wonder and curiosity, engaged creatively, been resilient, adaptable and flexible, brought new thinking to life and been discerning.  We have grown in our capacity to engage in productive struggle, understanding that learning occurs at the point of challenge. It is as we have engaged in the challenge of learning across all dimensions of life, that we have grown important skills. As well as being critical for us to flourish as people, we will recall that many of these capabilities were also those highlighted within the top 10 skills identified by the World Economic forum as being most valued by employers across all employment types around the world. Embracing challenge with a sense of wonder, creativity and discernment is how we grow, learn and live best.

We have seen these dispositions come to life through all the daily interactions of this community. They have been visible as students have engaged and learnt and led new initiatives and as staff have been committed to learn and grow and prompt wonder, curiosity and discernment across all dimensions of life. These dispositions have also been evident as our parents have provided opportunities for growth through their engagement with the Friends of Pacific, Pacific FC, PLC netball and volunteering to support a range of activities. We celebrate the growth of all our students and thank students, staff and parents for their tremendous generosity of spirit and heart for growing their gifts to make a difference. We thank parents, students and staff for their support of these events which were wonderful celebrations of growth and connection. A particular thank you to Mrs Michi Hauser, Mr Damian Davis and Mrs Sue Zweck and their teams for their leadership of these events.

We celebrate with our two Pacific robotics teams who competed at the Gladstone First Lego League Nationals, part of 42 qualifying teams. While neither team qualified for the international event, both squads made us incredibly proud with their hard work and perseverance. The Year 8-9 team soared with a 2nd place Innovation Project Award. Their growth was evident, earning "Accomplished" and "Exceeding" ratings from the judges. They were also nominated for the Rising All-Star Award – a team to watch in the future. Judges praised their smooth presentation, impressive prototype, and expert use of 3D modeling. In their first-ever competition, the Year 7 and 8 team impressed with their project, robot design and core values, earning top ratings across the board. Nominated for the Motivate Award, they showcased amazing teamwork, communication and enthusiasm.

At year’s end, we farewell and thank Foundation College teacher Mrs Leonie Prout for her service since 2008. Through her deep knowledge of her individual students, Mrs Prout has provided strong support to our Year 1, 2 and 3 learners and their families and made a valuable contribution to our P-5 team. We also thank Middle and Senior College Mathematics and Science teacher Mr Graham Kanowski and Middle and Senior College English and Humanities Teacher Mr Josh Zanker. Both Mr Kanowski and Mr Zanker have been committed to the learning of their students and made valuable contributions to their teaching teams and departments. We wish Mrs Prout, Mr Kanowski and Mr Zanker every blessing for the future.

We farewell and thank contract teachers Industrial Technology and STEM teacher Mr Noel Badaja, Japanese teacher Mrs Kana Chan, Middle and Senior College English and Humanities teacher Mrs Tammy Schinariol, and Middle and Senior College Mathematics and Science teacher Mr Jack Best. We have greatly appreciated the strengths and gifts that these staff have brought into our community and wish them well for their future pathways.

We thank our Director of Learning Ms Sue Arahill for her capable leadership of the mathematics department this year and support of the day to day running of the College, including the development of the timetable while Director of Staff, Mrs Kim Bonello was on leave in the first semester. We have appreciated Ms Arahill’s capable leadership in both areas.

As we look forward to 2025, we are pleased to announce that Mr Nigel Farley will take on the new role of Head of Student Engagement Senior College and Mr Andrew Doyle will be Head of Mathematics. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Ruth Wydell to our Mathematics and Science team. Mrs Wydell comes to us from St Monica’s Catholic College, Cairns and is a QCAA Endorser for Chemistry and an External Marker for Chemistry and Maths Methods and led the establishment of ‘Radical Maths’ programs with James Cook University in Cairns. We also welcome Mrs Jana Sajtos-Hobbs who has been Head of Mathematics at the Grace Lutheran College Caboolture and is a QCAA Confirmer and Marker for General Maths, Mr Adam Burton from Caloundra City Private School who has previously been a member of a QCAA Maths C panel and Mr Rob Pride who is an experienced Modern History, Legal Studies and Humanities teacher from Caloundra City Private School. We look forward to the return of Mr Scott Massie, Mr Steven Healy and Mrs Kate Vaney returning from leave in Term 1.  We look forward to the leadership and contribution of these very passionate, capable and experienced educators to our College community.

We are deeply grateful for all that staff, students and parents have contributed to our community this year and wish everyone a happy and blessed Christmas. We pray that God would bring joy and peace into our hearts and that all members of our community are refreshed by the change of rhythm that school holidays bring. We pray that God would provide for the needs of all people of the world and guide leaders to be wise in their care of people and the planet. God Bless and thank you!

A Message of Thanks

As we come to the end of another school year, the Spirituality and Service Action Group wanted to pass on a huge message of thanks to all within the PLC community. This term, we were able to witness the incredible generosity and community spirit shown by our students, families, and staff during this season of giving.

This term, our community united for two important initiatives. First, the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal saw an overwhelming response, with donations of gifts that will bring joy and hope to families doing it tough this Christmas. The area around our Christmas tree in the main reception was filled with thoughtful contributions, and the Salvation Army was deeply grateful for the support. Heartwarming stories of families giving selflessly, including students donating their pocket money, highlighted the spirit of compassion that thrives in our community.

Additionally, our ALWS “Gifts of Grace” campaign raised $450 through Friday ice block sales. These funds will go directly toward providing essential supplies for a village in Africa, offering vital support to those in need.

To everyone who contributed, whether through donations, fundraising efforts, or simply encouraging others to get involved—thank you. Your generosity and kindness are a testament to the strength of our community and a beautiful reminder of the true spirit of Christmas.

We wish you all a blessed and joyous Christmas, filled with love, peace, and the satisfaction of knowing you have made a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Celebrating Leadership and Growth

Celebrating Leadership and Growth: Year 9 and 10 Leadership Days

As the calendar year draws to a close, the Year 9 and Year 10 cohorts embraced meaningful opportunities to connect, grow, and reflect together during their respective Leadership Days. These experiences provided valuable moments of personal growth, team building, and reflection, marking significant milestones in their journey into the Senior College.

Year 10 Leadership Day

On Wednesday, 27th November 2024, the Year 10 cohort participated in a highly engaging and energising Leadership Day at the Alex Park Conference Centre, Alexandra Headland. The day was designed to strengthen cohort connection, foster teamwork, and nurture leadership qualities as students prepare for their transition into Year 11 in 2025.

Facilitated in part by the dynamic Lutheran Youth of Queensland (LYQ) team, students engaged in a variety of interactive and thought-provoking activities. The LYQ team’s expertise and energy created an environment that encouraged students to step out of their comfort zones, collaborate effectively, and reflect on their leadership potential.

The program also included retreat-style activities that allowed students to connect with peers who shared similar interests and strengths. Options such as a reflective beach walk, yoga, social touch football or cricket, and an art workshop provided a balance of relaxation and personal expression. This experience was a meaningful way for Year 10 students to end their year, equipped with stronger connections and a clearer sense of their role as leaders in the Pacific community.

Year 9 Leadership Day

On Thursday, 28th November 2024, the Year 9 cohort experienced their own Leadership Day as part of their transition into Senior College. Also led in part by the enthusiastic and experienced LYQ team, the program offered a range of activities designed to prepare students for the opportunities and responsibilities of Senior College life.

The day began with team-building exercises and activities that emphasised the importance of collaboration, self-reflection, and leadership. Students actively participated, demonstrating a strong willingness to engage and grow as individuals and as a group.

In the afternoon, students had a change of pace as they practiced their Rite Journey dance routines and prepared for their Homecoming Ceremony.  In the afternoon, parents joined for this significant event, bringing blazers to complete the formal attire, symbolizing the importance of the transition into the Senior College.

Looking Ahead

Both Leadership Days served as a powerful reminder of the character strengths, growing resilience, and potential of our Year 9 and 10 students. We are confident these experiences have laid a strong foundation for their continued growth and contribution to the Pacific community in the years ahead. Congratulations to both cohorts on their achievements and participation in these memorable events!

Celebrating a Wonderful Year of Learning, Friendships, and Community

As the year draws to a close, we take this opportunity to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared as a school community in 2024. From Prep to Year 5, this year has been a testament to the power of teamwork, dedication, and the joy of learning.

To our students, you have been at the heart of everything we do. Watching you grow in confidence, curiosity, and capability has been our greatest reward. From learning new skills in the classroom to showcasing resilience on the playground, each of you has contributed to making our school a vibrant and inclusive space. Your energy, kindness, and creativity have brightened every corner of our school.

To our teachers, your passion and commitment have been the driving force behind every achievement this year. Through your thoughtful lessons, encouragement, and tireless support, you’ve inspired your students to strive for excellence and embrace challenges. Your dedication to nurturing a love of learning and building positive relationships has truly shaped the year into a memorable one.

To our families, thank you for your unwavering support and partnership. Whether volunteering at events, helping with homework, or simply being there with words of encouragement, your involvement has been invaluable. Together, we’ve built a community that celebrates success, supports growth, and works collaboratively to create a nurturing environment for every child.

This year has been filled with many highlights:

•          Exciting classroom projects that sparked curiosity and innovation.

•          Community events where students, families, and staff came together to celebrate milestones and achievements.

•          Moments of kindness, laughter, and connection that have strengthened our bonds as a school community.

As we look back on 2024, we are grateful for the friendships, memories, and learning experiences that have shaped us all. It is through these shared moments that we’ve grown stronger as a community, united by our commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all.

As we move into the Christmas season, we wish everyone a time of rest, joy, and peace as you celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Thank you for making this year so special. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2025, ready for another year of growth, discovery, and shared success.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Mrs Sue Zweck, Head of Learning K-5

Food for Thought

Movember – The Last Call

As the month of the moustache draws to a close, this is a final request for you to dig deep and support this amazing cause. The Movember Foundation raises millions of dollars each year that all goes directly into improving men’s health and men’s mental health – funding programs in the intervention, treatment, and research contexts.

We all know someone who has struggled physically and/or mentally either within our family unit or within our local community, and we know the challenges that this poses for these people, their friends and family, and society in general. Every little donation makes such a big difference and as a PLC Community, we have set ourselves a goal of raising $1000 this Movember, with our current donations totalling $360 thus far – which we are extremely thankful for!

If you can support this fantastic cause in any capacity, please follow the link to donate and make your impact on men’s physical and mental health around the world. The link to donate is: https://au.movember.com/donate/details?teamId=2473192#amount.

The PLC MOUSTACHIOSOES would like to thank those of you who have already contributed to the Movember cause. Please know that we value your support! We would also like to thank those staff who have participated in the Movember campaign again this year – Mr Farley, Mr Brace, Mr Belchamber, Miss Snelling, and Mrs Kelly. We have attached photos of the team to give their moustaches the credit they deserve.

Thanks again for your generous support!

Brendan and the PLC Moustachiosoes

School Supplies Drive

At the end of each year, many students and families throw away unused items. This year we would like to be more sustainable by collecting any good quality stationary that is no longer needed. There are many students around the world and even here in QLD who do not have the necessary equipment to start the school year. By donating stationary you will be supporting all students to achieve the UN Global Goal of Quality Education.

Please read the poster below which details what we are looking for. Any donations can be placed into the donation bin in the library foyer. This bin can be accessed until the 19th of December and early in 2025.

Connecting College and Community

For Friends of Pacific, 2024 has also been filled with some great milestones. One of the most significant achievements was reaching over 50 registered volunteers. To our volunteers, whether you supported one event or many, we sincerely thank you, your contribution is what makes our success possible.

It’s important to note that Friends of Pacific’s success is a team effort. College staff, administration, sports teachers, parents, students and local businesses all play vital roles in helping us achieve our goals. To everyone who supported us this year—thank you!

Friends of Pacific is about much more than fundraising. It’s about creating a welcoming environment where parents and carers can connect and collaborate to make Pacific an exceptional College. If you’d like to be part of this amazing group, we warmly invite you to join us at our AGM on Tuesday 18th February next year.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has contributed to Friends of Pacific this year, especially our Executive Committee. These extraordinary parents tirelessly work behind the scenes—planning events, organising activities, stocktaking supplies, attending and participating in regular meetings and ensuring all runs smoothly. Thank you for your dedication and the support of our volunteers. Friends of Pacific are thrilled to be able to donate $35,000 to the College this year.

I hope everyone has a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas break and fantastic New Year…see you in 2025!!
