Compass No 745 - November 2024

From the Principal

Sharing Hope

As we look to Christmas, we are reminded of the hope that God brings into the world each moment through His grace and forgiveness. As we reflect over a year, there will be things that we are proud of and wish to celebrate and there will also be those things where we may have hurt others or not done our best. Learning to forgive ourselves and others and to learn through the mistakes we and others make frees us to live with greater purpose and hope. Learning to see and celebrate the gifts that God gives us each moment, even at the most challenging of times can bring light into our hearts and minds. Learning to accept what cannot be changed and focusing our energy on where we can have influence builds momentum, energy and possibility.

God promises to walk with us and to be the wind beneath our wings. He invites us to bring wonder into our daily lives and see life as an adventure. God loves each of us unconditionally. We are enough. We have enough. The people around us are enough. When we act out of love, grace and possibility we are freed to simply be.

Principal’s Log

Our community enjoyed the opportunity to congratulate and farewell our Year 12 students through their Graduation, Final Chapel and Formal. Throughout these events, there was a mixture of joy, excitement and appreciation. As a community we expressed our appreciation for the contribution our Year 12s have made as individuals and as a cohort. The Year 12s valued the way staff, peers, families and the community had connected with them and then contributed to their growth. We congratulate the graduating class of 2024 on the warm, appreciative and dignified way in which they celebrated their time at the College. We thank Director of Students, Ms Leigh Finter, the Heads of House, Chaplain Mark Hauser and Mrs Jodi Nielsen for their leadership and organisation of the students’ final week at the College. Each of our graduates is well prepared for the very different paths that lay ahead. We wish our graduates every blessing for the adventures that await them.

We congratulate our Robotics teams who came first and second at the Regional First Lego League and now progress this weekend to the national titles in Gladstone. The teams performed well in all elements of the competition but particularly well with their innovative design which drew on their learnings from Information Technology and STEM. We congratulate the teams and wish them well for their competition this weekend and thank Mrs Nicole Schirippa and Mrs Janine Stone for their inspiring leadership.

The Year 4-12 Sports Awards celebrated the engagement and sporting achievements of our students and staff and the growth of our competitive sport program throughout this year. We were delighted to welcome guest speaker and presenter Ms Alicia Woods, Pacific Alumni and Brisbane Roar Soccer player, who this year was selected to represent the Young Matildas in the FIFA U20’s Women’s World Cup in Columbia. We enjoyed hearing Tish share her recent experience and that of balancing sport and education, having commenced her soccer career at Pacific in Year 7.  Special recognition was given to our Junior Sports Stars: Kyle Huxley and Scarlett van den Hurk as well as Year 12 student Jessica Lloyd, who were honoured for Excellence in Sport. We also celebrated Jess Lloyd’s selection as one of 25 young athletes chosen to go to Canberra as an Olympic Change-Maker. We congratulate and thank all students for their involvement and growth. We thank our teachers, parents, coaches and managers who have generously supported and developed our students and teams throughout the year. We thank our Head of Sport, Mr Cameron West-McInnes, Head of Junior Sport, Mr Darren Hooper and Sports Aide, Mrs Lisa Muir, for their leadership and organisation of an increasingly strong sport program.

This week we have emailed families the outcomes of the MMG Parent survey completed at the end of Term 3. We are pleased with the results and are very appreciative of the time spent and the feedback provided through the comprehensive survey. The feedback provided by parents, staff and students will be used by College Council, the Administration and Learning Executive, staff, students and parents to continue to enhance our community as a rich place of learning and engagement. Parents are encouraged to access the email which was sent on Wednesday.

We are excited to announce that Pastor Mark Winter will join us as College Pastor in Week 8 of Term 1 next year. Pastor Winter has had extensive experience in schools, congregations connected to schools and, more recently, at Hope Vale in North Queensland. Pastor Winter values building relationships, welcoming people and inviting people to learn more about God’s love for them. We look forward to welcoming Pastor Mark Winter and his wife Andrea into our community next year.

The College Council has set the fees for 2025 being mindful about keeping the balance between ongoing enhancement of opportunity and facilities and keeping fees as affordable as possible. I would encourage families to read the detailed communication from College Council Chair, Mr Phil Thamm, which follows this article.

This week we have really enjoyed the Pop Up Christmas performances by our music ensembles who have welcomed us in the mornings and brought joy into our breaks. Families also enjoyed the Junior Ensemble concert. We thank Head of Instrumental Music, Mrs Helen Williams, music staff, our instrumental music tutors and our music students for sharing their love of music and their considerable talent. We also thank parents for their continued support of students and the music program at the College.

As a College, we are very blessed to have a large contingent of volunteers who support increased opportunity and connection through the Friends of Pacific, Pacific FC and PLC Netball. It was a delight to connect with some of our volunteers on Wednesday afternoon for afternoon tea and through them express our deep appreciation for all that our families and volunteers contribute to this community. Thank you to our volunteers for their attendance and Mrs Rhana Holt and the Hospitality team for their catering.

Our Middle and Senior College students will be receiving assessment feedback via NAV. We encourage families to discuss this feedback with their young people over the coming week and identify one to three things they are going to improve to enhance their learning.

Important learning will occur throughout the coming week. We also look forward to a range of events, including the P-5 Carols, the End of Year Services where we celebrate the contribution and achievements of students, staff and parents, the Rite Journey Homecoming and the Year 9 and 10 leadership days. We look forward to a strong finish of learning and celebration.

We say a prayer of thanks for all the gifts God gives us daily and in particular the gifts our graduating students, staff and volunteers have given us. We pray that God would equip us to be people who bring hope and possibility into the lives of people we encounter.

Dr Bronwyn Dolling, Principal

2025 Fees

The College Council has approved the 2025 fees which are now available through the College Website.

Many factors were considered in preparation of the 2025 budget including the increase in education costs and quality of education programs to be delivered, increased staffing costs and the planned future development of the College. The College has made every attempt when preparing the budget to keep fee increases to a minimum.

Staffing increases include the addition of a Head of Student Engagement Senior College, an additional Learning Enrichment teacher in the Middle College and an additional part time Counsellor. These staff will strengthen both the academic and social, emotional support of students across the College.

We look forward to further facility enhancement through the construction of the extension of the gym which will include 2 indoor courts, a fitness gym, a dance space and function as a community gathering space.  The anticipated cost of the gym is approximately $11m. We are grateful for the state government funding of $2.5m towards the project. We are currently finalising tenders and look forward to the builders being on site from the beginning of 2025.

Smaller building refurbishments will also be undertaken in 2025. These include the upgrade of S block toilets and the J Block change spaces which were mentioned as areas for improvement in the recent MMG survey as well as a social space for Middle College students which has been designed by our Year 9 leaders.

During 2024 the College invested considerable funds in the cyber uplift of the College’s infrastructure to protect the safety and security of personal data stored within College systems. These costs have been absorbed by the College in 2024, however the IT levy has been increased in 2025 to ensure the continuity of delivery of the College’s cyber improvement program.

The College Council is mindful to keep the balance between fee increases and the ongoing improvement of the quality of learning, student support, facilities and operations at the College.

We thank families for their ongoing support.

Mr Phil Thamm, College Council Chair

The Christmas Message

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.’”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Luke 2:8-10

As each school year comes to a close, there is always an air of excitement that filters through the school. The Christmas holidays are just around the corner, and it’s a good time to reflect on the year that’s been. It’s also a chance to think about the message at the heart of Christmas—the birth of Jesus and the hope He brings.

In the Christmas story, the shepherds are just going about their usual routines when something extraordinary happens. Angels appear to them, delivering the news that the Saviour has been born, in the significant event in the history of the world, and a message to us all that God’s love reaches everyone, no matter who they are or what they do.

The angel’s message was clear: this news is for ALL people. The birth of Jesus wasn’t just a moment in history; it’s the foundation of the joy, peace, and hope we carry with us today. It’s a story that has the capacity to affect lives, starting from a humble manger in Bethlehem and extending to each of us, wherever we are.

As we start to wrap up another school year, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on all that we’ve learned—not just in our classes but in our interactions with one another. School is about more than academic success; it’s also about growing as people, learning to work together, and supporting each other through challenges. These lessons are just as important as anything we study in a textbook, and they shape who we are becoming.

The end of the year is also an opportunity to think about how we can carry these lessons into the next chapter. How can we take what we’ve learned—about resilience, kindness, and community—and put it into practice in the year ahead? The shepherds didn’t just hear the good news and keep it to themselves; they acted on it and shared it with others. We’re called to do the same, to let our experiences this year inspire how we live, learn, and grow in the future.

This Christmas, I hope we can all take a moment to appreciate the joy of knowing we are deeply loved by God – the heart of the Christmas message for us. Whether you’re spending time with family, catching up with friends, or just enjoying a bit of rest, I hope that you can carry that love with you and know that you are also loved.

Amen.

Final Week to Share the Joy This Christmas

As the end of the year draws near, we are in the final week of our school’s support for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal. Over the past few weeks, our community has been generously donating toys, gifts, vouchers, and pantry items to help bring joy and hope to families in need.

For our P-5 families, there’s one last chance to contribute at the P-5 Carols Night this Friday. A Christmas tree will be set up in the gymnasium to receive donations, adding a special touch to the evening’s festivities.

All P-11 families can also make their final donations by bringing any last minute donations to the main administration, where gifts will be placed under the tree set up there until Monday next week.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has already donated. If you’ve been considering giving, this is the perfect time to do so. All contributions will be delivered to the local Salvation Army on Monday, 25th November (approximately 9:30am), ensuring they reach those in need in time for Christmas.

Thank you for your generosity and for helping us make this Christmas a season of joy and hope for others.

P-5 News

Congratulations to the Transitioning Classes of 2024

As the end of term draws near, I would like to take the time to reflect on the journey of the current Year Five students. Toward the end of last year, we began meeting as small groups to chart a course as they prepared for their final year in the Junior College. This has been reinforced through leadership days and supported firmly by the Year 5 teaching team.  As a cohort, they have continued the legacy of service in action through the Gawun program. Not only has it been heart-warming to see the interactions and support that our Gawun leaders have provided, but they, too, have learned more about themselves as individuals and as leaders.

Their involvement in playground events, encouraging learning with younger students and supporting our Foundation College on the school grounds in the mornings have provided tangible examples of the impact that our young people can have on each other. Special mention must be made of their dedication to environmental causes, and they have continued the legacy of previous cohorts by promoting a sustainable mindset in our Junior College. They have also set an admirable example to their buddies in Prep and, in the meantime, learned numerous lessons personally.

I would like to thank the transitioning cohort of Year Five for their dedication to their learning, warmth, sense of humour, and commitment to many important causes within the College and the community. As a Junior College, we look forward to what the remainder of your journey at Pacific will hold.

We also acknowledge our Year Two cohort as they transition from the Foundation to the Junior College. We celebrate the gifts nurtured through your time in the Foundation College, and we look forward to continued growth as you enter your next learning phase. We are excited to welcome the cohort into our new Junior College Learning Space at the beginning of next year.

Wellbeing Growth

As this is my last Compass article for the year, I would like to make special mention of Mrs Sarah Atkinson, Mrs Shelley Hogan, and Mrs Kirsty Ridley, who have provided meaningful assembly messages that provided clear and relevant direction of the social and emotional direction of students in the Junior School. Pastoral care of students and promoting the message at school and home provide a connection for parents and carers to have a strong understanding of the messages addressed here at school.

Extracurricular Opportunities

During the last few weeks, we have the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of students through music experiences and sporting awards. The Year 5 and 6 concert band, along with the Year Three and Four strings students, provide the platform to celebrate the amazing talent throughout those years and also provide a snapshot of the individual growth of students, some of whom have been involved in instrumental music for four years. The wider community attended both well, and it is great to share the music experience with an audience once again. I would like to thank Mrs Helen Williams for her leadership of this program as well as Ms Krist-elle Hill, Miss Linley Chai and Mr Paul Cusick for their continued support of music across the Junior College.

Last week’s sporting awards showcased the wide and varied sporting choices that are provided by the College. From house carnivals and SCISSA sports to running clubs and board riders, students are provided enormous choices to become involved in many areas that help build individual capacity. It is often said that sport doesn’t build character; it reveals it. The friendships, camaraderie and healthy competitiveness that are promoted through sport here at Pacific is a credit to our Head of Junior Sport, Mr Darren Hooper, who leads a committed team that continues to build a healthy sporting culture here at Pacific. I would like to thank all teaching staff and sports coaches for their support of the program and the benefits that it brings.

Ceremonies and Celebrations

The final day of the term allows us to formally commend the achievements of our Junior College students, staff, and families with the Prep-5 Closing Service at 8:45 am on Friday, the 29th of November.  We look forward to acknowledging our transitioning year levels and celebrating the achievements of our Year 3 and 5 Academic and Endeavor Award recipients. A small celebratory morning tea for students and families will follow this service.

Christmas Cards and Sweets

With the Christmas Season upon us, it is often accompanied by students wishing to bring cards and candy canes in to wish classmates the best for the season. It is a lovely gesture; however, it can present challenges around increased waste in the college and parents being unaware of students' food intake. Often, these candy canes have a high sugar content and colours and flavours that react differently to individual students. This year, we ask that you consider these factors before sending in these items and possibly explore other ways for your child to wish their classmates the best of the season. As a College, we thank you for your support in this initiative moving forward.

Preparing for 2025

The College is excited to announce a 2025 trial of shared work arrangements in two Junior College classes, reflecting our commitment to contemporary employment practices and high-quality education. Four teachers will alternate working 5-day fortnights, with robust planning to ensure continuity, including weekly handovers and seamless learning. This initiative aims to enhance staff well-being and engagement while maintaining a stable and nurturing learning environment for every child. A formal review in Term Three will evaluate the trial's success, with community consultation playing a key role in the decision-making process.

Gratitude

When we reach the final few weeks of school, a common theme is “Where did the year go?” Every week, month, term, and semester is full of learning opportunities that, at times, it can seem that the year has passed without us noticing. However, if we reflect on the growth all of us have experienced during the year, we begin to see where we began and where we are going. As a College and on behalf of all Foundation and Junior College Staff, we would like to express our gratitude and thanks for supporting your child’s growth by navigating home learning and attending culminating events and celebrations right across the Prep-5 spaces. Our success as a connected community is in large part of the reflection of the lengths the wider community goes to broaden the College's work. Thank you.

Wishing everyone a blessed and safe Christmas break.

Take care and God bless,

Mr Damian Davis, Head of Staff and Students P-5

Food for Thought

Movember – It’s time to dig deep

Firstly, a massive thank you to those within our PLC community who have already generously donated to our Movember team. It is such a great cause, and we appreciate any support that our families can offer.

This year we have 5 of our staff embracing the Movember challenge to make a positive and real difference to men’s mental health around the world. Mr Paul Brace, Mr Nigel Farley, Mr Rob Belchamber, and myself are all growing a moustache to support the cause and Miss Georgie Snelling and Mrs Chantel Kelly have committed to walking/running 60km in the month of November. For those who haven’t heard of Movember, below is a little about the cause:

In 2003, Movember started a movement for men's health. A movement that has since funded over 1,320 men's health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men. Movember have taken on three of the biggest health issues affecting men: mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. As a result, men are living healthier, longer lives. This movement started with 30 Mo Bros. Now, it it has over 6 million people participate each year. Participants can grow a mo (moustache) and/or commit to walking/running a minimum of 60km over the month of November. The funds raised all go directly back into research and the funding of men's health projects around the world. More information can be found at: https://au.movember.com/?home

If you can support the cause, no donation is too small, with every dollar adding up to better and more effective outcomes for men’s health around the globe. You can support our cause by donating to the PLC Moustachiosoes Team at: https://au.movember.com/team/2473192

We thank you in advance for your support of this amazing cause!

Brendan and the PLC Moustachiosoes.
