Athletes Inspiring A Nation and Our Community

Many of us will have taken great delight in watching athletes giving their all after years of training as they have tested themselves against athletes from across the Commonwealth. It has been inspirational to watch our Australian athletes perform so well. For us as a community, it has been particularly inspiring to see past student Kaylee McKeown win gold in the pool and be a gracious winner on the world stage. We have heard her reflect on the important role her older sister Taylor McKeown and her family have played. We saw her pause in her personal celebrations in the pool to clap home a last-placed swimmer from another country. We have seen cyclist Matt Glaetzer overcome injuries from a crash in the velodrome and rise up after the disappointment of losing a bronze medal to win gold. In his post-event interview, he encouraged everyone to “overcome the challenges we all face…and always try again”.

For all of these athletes, there are back stories of having overcome challenges as they have worked hard to make the most of their talents. They inspire us to have the courage and resilience to make the most of our gifts and talents and to always try again when life’s hurdles arise. It is always worth giving our best, whether we are going to change the world or make the life of one person better. God has given each of us gifts that can make a difference for others. Each of us can be champions in our own way by making the most of what we have.

Principal’s Log

This week we held the last of the Subject Expos for Years 9, 10, and 11 2023. The new format provided the opportunity for parents and students to interact with Heads of Departments and senior teachers to learn more about the subjects they were considering. Parents commented on the range and rich nature of learning that enables our Year 9-12 students to gain insights into themselves and the world as they grow their capabilities. There was a great vibe across all three nights as parents and students made the most of connecting with teachers and each other. We thank our Heads of Department and our senior teachers for their generosity of time and for their ongoing commitment to developing units of learning that provide authentic and engaging ways for students to deepen their understandings and capabilities. Thank you to our parents and students for making the most of these opportunities and to the Head of Learning Middle College, Mrs Jo Belchamber, Head of Learning Senior College, Ms Anne-Marie Gerlach and to Head of Career Development, Mrs Wanda Hayes.

Many of our music students have been enjoying the opportunity to compete in the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfods. We wish them and our Head of Instrumental Music, Mrs Helen Williams all the best as they continue to showcase their skills over the weekend and look forward to sharing their successes next week.

On Wednesday, our Prep students celebrated 100 days of wonderful learning at Pacific. The students and teachers celebrated by dressing as if they were one hundred years old and participated in some themed class activities. It was a fun day enjoyed by all. We congratulate our Prep teachers and students on this great milestone.

This week students from Years 7-12 competed in the Queensland Northern Region Indoor Netball Secondary Schools Tournament at Caboolture. Our three teams competed courageously across the two-day event with all teams reaching the grand final game within their division. Two of our competing teams, the Year 9/10 and Year 11/12 teams, travelled home with Championship trophies. Congratulations to all students and coaches, Michelle Dufty, Mel Pietrala, Jayde Noble and Caity O Keefe, for an extremely successful netball season.

Also, this week, the Year 8-12 2023 musical Pippin was launched by Mrs Janine Delaney. Students have been invited to register for auditions via NAV. The cast and crew of Dracula celebrated their performance at their post-production screening. Appreciation was expressed by the students to all those who had helped in the staging of the Dracula production, certificates were presented, and they enjoyed the opportunity to watch the premiere of the video of their performance together. We look forward to next year’s Senior production.

Gaining Wisdom

Did you know that the first email was sent back in 1971? Or that the first-ever created website is still online? Or the fact that the word ‘surfing’ in relation to internet terminology was first used in 1992?

It could be argued that the invention of the internet has had one of the most significant impacts on our daily lives, since the printing press. In writing this short devotion, I have referred to the internet at least five times already. There is so much information out there, and most of us have not even begun to scratch the surface of what it is capable of. It is a great source of information. But with our search for knowledge, is this the same as us finding wisdom?

Obviously, in biblical times, people didn’t have access to the range of information that we have today. However, some of the wisest people who have ever graced the earth came from those times. King Solomon is touted as one of the wisest people who have ever lived. There is a big difference between finding knowledge and demonstrating wisdom. Typically, we think of wisdom as being a favourable quality that is used for good. However, wisdom can also be used for selfish ambition. In James 3:13-18 we are told that all good things come from God and that when we pursue these things, it is a sign of true wisdom.

When we walk humbly with each other; listen to and support one another, and have pride in what we do, we are living for God. We see the positive effects that this way of living has on our community.

As you go throughout this term, may we all approach our interactions with each other with true wisdom - the wisdom that comes from God’s love for us all.

From the Head of Middle College

Resilience

Resilience: ‘The ability to cope mentally, emotionally and or physically with a challenge and to return to pre-challenge status quickly.’

The challenge was an 8.5km canoe paddle with 48km/hr wind gusts. The location was Somerset Dam. The participants were 48 brave Year 8 PLC students and 10 staff.

To say this was a challenge is an understatement. The conditions were not favorable, and the physical effort needed was very high. Mental strength would also be required in spades if we were to reach our destination safely.

I was absolutely amazed at the efforts of our students and more amazed at their ability to conquer this challenge and then return to a more normal status very quickly. In fact, most students seemed at ease and comfortable as soon as they reached the shore.

An incredible effort of mental toughness was shown by all our Year 8 students during their Outdoor Education experience last week and a true reflection of just how resilient our young people can be when they are pushed out of their comfort zones.

Thank you to Mr Paul Brace and his amazing team who worked tirelessly to bring this opportunity to life.

Writing in Prep to Year 2

What is writing?
Writing is a process of using letters, words, and sentences to communicate thoughts and ideas. Even though it might look simple, it requires the synthesis and application of many understandings and skills. Even when writing a note to a friend, the author needs to consider the ideas to be communicated, the structure and sentences that suit the purpose, the correct letters, and sounds, how to form the letters, and where to include punctuation – all to make sure that the message is communicated effectively.

Why is it so important?

Writing provides an important way to communicate our ideas, and in doing so we can entertain, inform, and persuade others. As we write, we sort our thoughts and learn new things. It is a way to express what we have learned but also a way to express who we are, our interests, and our ideas. It makes our thinking visible at school and throughout higher education, and writing is used by others to judge our understanding of topics.

What does learning to write look like?

The best way to learn to write, or to become a better writer, is to write. In the early years of school, this is done through real-life and life-like situations as children experiment with drawing and writing and build their confidence.

Each term students are supported to create a specific written text as part of their English unit of work. For example, they might create a poster to persuade others to read their favourite picture book, construct a written retelling of a familiar fairy tale, or write a description of a favourite place. Students are also provided with an opportunity to create texts of their own choice during Daily 5 Café activities, focusing on creativity, artistry, fun, and enjoyment.

How do we know that children are progressing?

Teachers analyse samples of writing at the beginning (pre-test) and end of each English unit, as well as provide feedback throughout the learning phase. Teachers provide feedback in relation to writing scales and criteria sheets, developed specifically for each writing task. In this way, teachers and students know the ‘next steps’.

What can you do to support writing at home?

• Draw attention to writing in the world (e.g., signs, posters, notes, advertisements, labels).

• Find everyday opportunities to tell and share stories (e.g., after visiting relatives, when something funny happens), encouraging some ‘tall tales’ and exaggerated events.

• Play with language, sharing your ideas and encouraging everyone to participate (e.g., silly rhymes and puns on words, new poems, or stories with characters from your family).

• Find everyday opportunities to write (e.g., shopping lists, birthday cards, postcards, drawings, diaries, notes in lunchboxes, writing games where everyone writes a part of a story).

• Use a range of writing implements to build confidence and strength in young writers’ hands (e.g., pens, pencils, chalk, whiteboard pens, paint, coloured paper, scissors, glue, stickers).

Year 9 Subject Selection

Thank you to the many families who attended the Year 9 Elective Selection Evening on Tuesday. It was pleasing to see that students were well prepared for this event, arriving armed with their preference guide and questions about elective offerings.

Families are now encouraged to reflect on the exciting learning opportunities and select electives based on their individual priorities. Students may wish to experience new and unfamiliar subject areas, embrace academic challenges or engage in a practical subject, developing skills for life. Getting a balanced curriculum and academic workload is an important consideration.

Students are asked to select elective subjects for Semester 1 and Semester 2 by Wednesday 10^th August 2022 (Week 5 of Term 3). They can apply to change subjects in the first two weeks of the course commencing next year, but subject changes will be dependent on availability and will be negotiated with the Head of Learning Middle College. Careful choices now will result in a smooth and successful learning journey next year.

It has been great to speak with Year 8 students who are excitedly anticipating their subjects for 2023 and we look forward to receiving the subject choices back next week.

Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarship at Griffith University (Year 12)

The Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarships are awarded each year purely based on the Principal’s recommendation. Only one is awarded in each school.

This prestigious scholarship provides significant financial support for a high-achieving Year 12 student who is doing what matters today to create a brighter future.

Valued at up to $24,000, it aims to encourage students to continue to excel as they prepare to take their next step to study at Griffith.

To be eligible, you need to be:

Book Week Dress Up Day

Students from K – Year 6 are invited to dress up as a book character on Monday 22^nd August to celebrate Book Week. There will be a costume parade on the oval at 8.40am and a photo booth in the library at lunchtime. It’s always a fun day and we love seeing how creative kids can get in dreaming up costume ideas.

Year 7-12 Sport

All Schools Basketball

Well done on the efforts so far this season. The Senior teams are almost half-way through their season, so there are only a few games left to play.

There were some great games last Friday with our Senior B Girls recording another win. This puts them in 2^nd place on the ladder and on track for finals in week 8.

The Senior B Boys played their best team game of the season and, despite a loss this week, there are positive signs for this team as they prepare for their CBSQ tournament at the end of the term. We wish them all the best in their preparations and thank the players and Mr Burdon for the hours of work they have already put into the preparation. The Senior E boys suffered their first loss of the season with an under-manned team. They will be looking to bounce back this week in their game against the top-seeded GSLC and make a push for finals as well.

The Senior C Girls had a doubleheader and, after losing their opening match, dug deep to claim their first win of the season! It was a great game, and the girls did exceptionally well. Their motivation was: trying to get a win for their coach (who has been unwell for the past two weeks). Well done girls – you have another double-header this week. The Senior D Girls have been playing well all season and needed the well-earned break last week with the bye. They will be fresh and ready to come back again this week in their 4.00pm game at Maroochydore Stadium against Suncoast.

Secondary Schools Indoor Netball

Our Years 7-12 netball season came to a close this week with 3 PLC representative teams competing in the Secondary Schools Indoor Netball Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday. Well done to our Years 7/8, Years 9/10 and Years 11/12 girls teams for their strong efforts across the 2-day tournament. This event was a great finish to a big year of netball, and it was wonderful to have the teams wearing our new representative colours.

On Tuesday, our teams had great success and they won all their games across the day. It is a testament to how hard the players have been working to develop such strong cohesion during matches.

All teams had a fantastic last day of the tournament, with each team earning a place in the Grand Final for their divisions. The Year 7/8 team competed strongly in their final match, finishing Runners Up in their division. This team showed great skill across the tournament and will no doubt continue to succeed next year. Congratulations to the Year 9/10 and Year 11/12 teams for winning their Grand Final matches, and bringing home the championship trophies. These teams demonstrated considerable tenacity and skill against some quality competition and their victory in the final games was off the back of their strong efforts earlier in the tournament.

It has been a fantastic team effort across 2 days from all players and coaches. Thank you to Michelle Dufty, Mel Pietrala, Jayde Noble, and Caity O Keefe for their tireless efforts in preparing for this carnival.

SCISSA Touch Football Results

Our Junior touch football teams had their first round of games on Wednesday night. The Junior Girls teams stepped up to compete in a double header for the round. They lost narrowly (1 point) in their first game before building to a strong 7-4 victory in their second game. The Junior Boys will have to wait another week for their first proper match after low numbers from the opposition meant they had to forfeit.

The Intermediate Boys faced tough opposition at Matthew Flinders, and while they didn’t get the results they wanted, it was a good experience for the boys to learn from. Their commitment to the game, even when the scoreboard was against them was commendable.

The Senior Girls were down a number of players in their fixture but they rose to the challenge and competed fiercely against the St Andrews team. While the 1st half reflected the 4-1 scoreline, the girls fought back to a 2-2 draw in the second half. A fantastic effort!

SSCRU Girls Rugby Results

Our U14 Girls continue to show improvement with every game and their hard work at early morning training on Mondays is clearly paying off. While they couldn’t cross the line in the first game, they put on 2 tries in the second game. The U16 Girls competed strongly in their first match against James Nash, only going down by one conversion. They followed this up with a hard-fought victory against Good Samaritan in their second match, finishing the game 22-17.

13-19 years District Athletics

Several forms have been returned for our 13-19 years Athletes District Carnival next Thursday and Friday, however, we are still waiting for the return of others. Families will receive an email this week with what forms are still outstanding. Please ensure they are emailed to Mrs Lisa Muir at lmuir@pacluth.qld.edu.au no later than Monday 8^th August. We understand it is a considerable amount of paperwork, but it is required in order for students to participate in the carnival. Students without the correct paperwork will not be eligible to participate. Please email Mr Cameron West-McInnes if you have any queries.

Well done to the following students who have been selected for the Independent District Athletics team to compete at the Sunshine Coast Regional Athletics Carnival later this month.

Congratulations also to Scarlett Van den Hurk who competed on Tuesday afternoon in the 1500m District trials. Scarlett finished in 3^rdplace in the Under 10 Girls race.

Years 3-6 Swimming Carnival
With the delayed start to the 2022 school year, PLC was unable to run the scheduled Years 3-6 swimming carnival in Week 2.
We have rescheduled the Years 3-6 swimming carnival to the end of this term (Wednesday 14^th September). The venue for this carnival will still be at Beerwah Aquatic Centre.

Pacific Lutheran College has several sports development programs outside of school hours. These programs encourage participation, giving students the opportunity to be part of a team, and learn basic skills of the game.

The parent-led Pacific FC Soccer and PLC Netball Clubs compete on Saturdays in community competitions throughout the Sunshine Coast.

The countdown is officially on for finals! With only four rounds left, all teams are training well and playing hard to secure positions in the finals.

With multiple coaches unable to attend Saturday’s games due to sickness or previous commitments, a big thank you is extended to the parents, managers, and other coaches who stepped up and assisted each team through their games. We are so lucky to have a club full of amazing people who will happily help when needed!

MATCH REPORTS Round 15

U6 Mantarays - Dewy grass, bluebird skies and glorious winter sun can mean only one thing…Game time! At home, the Mecca of soccer - PLC Field 7. The Mantarays were up before daybreak. Meditating. Visualising. Preparing. Moments of greatness have become dime a dozen for the Mantarays but on Saturday we saw moments of glory. A peak through the window of time. A peak at the future of Australian soccer. Unrivalled teamwork features heavily with the Mantarays passing game elevating to a new level.

U7 Snappers + Orcas – The Snappers took on the Orcas this round with 12 players from Year 1 taking the field. Outstanding goals from Liam, great listening from Nate and Benjamin. Awesome footwork from Hugo. Player of the match was Lucas. Well done both teams!

U9 Seahorses – The team played the best game of their season! They went down 4-3 to a fantastic Currimundi team but each one of the girls played an amazing game and it was almost impossible to pick player of the match and awards. We are so proud of our little group of girls and their improvement, skills and the sense of fun and friendship they bring to the game. Ashlan thumped in 2 goals and Haya manoeuvred her way through several of the opposing team to score a cracker of a goal, and she ended with player of the match. Esmae scored the super effort award and Sophia the encouragement award.

U9 Sharks – The Sharks had a fab pregame warm up with the promo team from Jetts, getting a few practice goals between the pair of them. The game against Currimundi went well, a 3:2 win in our favour. Ollie worked hard to score player of the match and Noah M was the player of the match from the other team (with another free sausage). Marshall produced a stellar kick, straight into the goals from back near the midfield, giving everyone a surprise, including himself. Great game Sharks!

U11 Marlins – They had a tough game with 4 players away or sick so there was a lot of running & no breaks! The team played with heart but were outplayed by the unrelenting Palmwoods team! There were some brilliant saves by both goalkeepers especially by Mani saving 2 penalty shots in a row.

U12 Razors - Another game against the Chancellor Cats saw the Razors keen to take the field and turn the tide. An even start to the game, the Razors then switched another gear and took the lead with high pressure paying off. Although an equaliser not long after, the Razors kept creating opportunities, running away with the game resulting in a deserved 4-1 win. Excellent play and teamwork made it all happen. We’re looking forward to the next game!

U14 Barracudas – The team took on Currimundi and went head-to-head early on and were still 0-0 after 20 minutes. After a counterattack, Nick slotted home a scorcher and Pacific went up 1-0. Currimundi struck just before halftime to level at 1-1. Pacific stepped up the pace in the second half, led by Talys who was on everything. Hayden, Manny, Kai and Taj kept the middle solid. Two team goals saw us quickly on top. Brodie W and Carter were strong at the back, as was Tom with good hands as keeper. Ronan was chasing down opponents everywhere. Ned B and Bruce diffused threats all match. Nathan from the Razors helped and slotted in beautifully. 3-1 in the end to the Barracudas.

Weekly worship services are held at 14 Bombala Terrace Caloundra at 9.00am. We are thankful that we can meet together each week for worship. As we do this, there are still physical distancing, and hygiene requirements we need to follow to ensure the health and safety of everyone in our community.

Our worship services are intergenerational with a blend of traditional and contemporary.
