Last Wednesday 20^th July, the Year 11 cohort participated in the Lutheran Youth Queensland Leadership Day, focusing on the theme of Intentional Influence and its key aim of students engaging with the statement “Leadership is a relationship, not a position”.  Throughout the day, students explored and discussed the concept of Alpha Leadership and identified that everyone in their cohort is a leader. Individually, students established foundational values which will allow them to fulfil their leadership potential.

Year 11 student applications for 2023 leadership positions including College Captains and Vice Captains; Pacific Action Group Captain in the areas of Academic, Culture, Environmental, Pastoral Care, Spirituality and Service, Sport, Technology; House Captains and House Vice Captains are due on Friday 29^th July and are to be handed in to Reception in the Main Administration building.

I pray that each applicant enjoys this process and uses the opportunity to learn more about their God-given strengths and capabilities.

This week’s thread surrounds school engagement and a commitment to learning. The Bible verse provides guidance around celebrating knowledge and Proverbs 3:13-20 speaks of “Finding Wisdom.”

On assembly last week, Mrs Sue Zweck celebrated the learning occurring in Prep in and around NAIDOC Week. The students showed their comprehension of the importance of stories and the continuity of knowledge between generations that has occurred historically over many millennia. Whilst witnessing this I was reminded of our Pacific Way learning statement of collaborating by listening, valuing difference, and celebrating others’ potential. By beginning to develop an increased awareness of the importance of the shared knowledge that Indigenous People have nurtured and constructed, we understand that diversity of thinking builds greater awareness in us all.

In his widely acclaimed book Sand Talk, Tyson Yunkaporta speaks of applying an Indigenous mindset toward the issues facing the world globally. Through sand images, oral stories and scientific explanations, Tyson speaks of the importance of wholehearted inter-connection and more importantly, the innate dignity of us all to not allow us to think we are more important than anyone else.

In one section he speaks of the forgiveness expressed to those who have deviated from what their society has expected. It is a given that from time to time, we will all put our needs above the needs of others. However, once justice has been dispensed, these members were welcomed back into their society and their misdemeanours were never spoken again. In fact, these figures continued to play a crucial role in stories and ceremonies and served as a reminder to others and guide future generations.

Wisdom comes in many forms. As the saying goes “Hindsight is a wonderful thing”. I know as a parent sometimes the greatest life lesson we can have is to allow our children to find out the hard way, no matter how much of a warning has come regarding the possible consequences. But how often all of us would like to have our time again to potentially have a chance to redo. Of course, this is not possible. However, we can learn from our mistakes. It is our intention as a College to proactively promote an engagement in learning and support individuals should or when they require guidance. It is in our reflections and ongoing considerations we are truly gaining wisdom.

Our young people are our future and being part of a community that is striving for wisdom is a unique privilege. Our students will be faced with challenges not even considered yet but if equipped adequately, they will be prepared for what life challenges them with. As Proverbs states, if we find wisdom and gain understanding, we truly will be blessed.

You may not be familiar with the term, but ‘sextortion' is a form of blackmail where someone threatens to share intimate images of you unless you give in to their demands. It has been an issue for more than a decade, with many adults falling victim to this type of online crime. More recently though, it has been reported that there has been a higher rate of adolescent males falling victim, but that is not to say that young females are not also targeted.

Across the globe, organised criminal gangs are using social media, chat apps, instant messaging platforms and online games to target and connect with their victims. Recently, there has been a 400% increase in this type of crime being reported to police in Australia alone with these figures being replicated in most western countries. Any child that uses an online account to connect on social media, chat apps, instant messaging platforms or online games needs to understand the dangers associated with engaging with random people that they don’t know personally. Therefore, it is vitally important for adult carers to be aware of this serious issue and to start having an age-appropriate conversation with their young person as early as possible to help protect them from online offenders making demands.

Even though your young person’s online account may be set to private, random people can still message your child. Managing devices can be difficult, especially with older teens, but it is important to weigh up the risks and dangers. Sadly, even good kids who never make a poor decision elsewhere in their life, can and do make poor choices online.

This Special Report explains how your young person can fall victim to such a crime and what action to take to support them. Students in Years 4 and 5 are invited to join Drone Legends. This course will be held on Wednesday afternoons in the library from 3.15pm to 4.30pm, commencing Wednesday 17^th August until 2^nd November. Students will learn about drone safety, how to fly Tello drones and learn drone skills needed for jobs now and in the future. Places are limited to 12 students. Interested students can collect permission forms from the library.

Weekly worship services are held at 14 Bombala Terrace Caloundra at 9.00am. We are thankful that we can meet together each week for worship. As we do this, there are still physical distancing, and hygiene requirements we need to follow to ensure the health and safety of everyone in our community.

Our worship services are intergenerational with a blend of traditional and contemporary.
