Compass no 649 - June 2022

From the Principal

Being Before Doing

As we wake each morning, our minds can quickly switch into the list of things that await us on a new day.  Slowing our minds by taking time to notice the beauty in the people and the world around us can help us to be more human beings than “human doings”.  Stepping outside, taking deep breaths of fresh cold air, maybe seeing the last stars of the night battling with an emerging sunrise can recentre and refresh.  Taking time to reflect on the things we are grateful for in this new moment and new day can also freshen our minds and bring joy.

God invites us to, “Be Still and Know That I Am God”.  We are invited to come to Him in prayer and put our trust in Him to take care of our needs.  By letting go of our chatter, we are freed to grow richly within His grace as we adventure through the successes and learning moments of each day.

Principal's Log

Congratulations to our Year 5 to 10 teams who enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the da Vinci Decathlon online tournament last week.  The competition provides the opportunity for highly able students to expand their thinking, build team skills and enhance their creativity as they compete with students from schools across the state. Students compete in teams across ten different disciplines.  We congratulate all teams, particularly our Year 5 team who came 1st in ideation, 1st in science and 3rd in legacy, and our Year 9 team who were 2nd in ideation, 3rd in engineering, 3rd in art and poetry and 3rd in code breaking.  This is an outstanding achievement for these students and we thank Mr Andrew Block, Mrs Julie Darr, Mrs Adelle Byerlee, Mrs Linda Sydes, and Mrs Chantelle McAllister for providing this rich learning experience for our students.

Our Year 3 to 12 students enjoyed the opportunity to compete in their Athletics Carnivals last week at the Sunshine Coast University Athletic Track.  Students showed very high levels of participation and spirit. Wira house won both the Year 3-6 and the Year 7-12 carnivals and Bula house won the spirit award at both carnivals. We congratulate all students on the way they participated and supported their houses and thank the Friends of Pacific BBQ team for providing much-appreciated food and beverages on the days. Thank you to our Physical Education staff, very capably led by Mr Cameron West-McInnes, Mr Darren Hooper and newly appointed Sports Administrator Mrs Lisa Muir, for their organisation and leadership of the carnivals.

We congratulate our netballers on a successful season as part of the Sunshine Coast Secondary School Netball Competition and wish the PLC Jade, PLC Sapphires and PLC Opal teams all the best for their grand final games played at 4.00pm and 5.00pm on Monday 13th June.

It was a delight to watch our U13 Boys Rugby team compete against Sunshine Coast Grammar in the semi finals last night. It was a tightly contested game where both teams displayed high levels of skill and sportsmanship.  The boys can be very proud of their performance.  Grammar won the game by a converted try. We wish our boys all the best as they now go on to play for the silver plate next week.

May God grant us the presence of mind to grow through moments of stillness.

The Right Kind of Training

Last week in chapel, we heard about the importance and significance of the Fourth Commandment – “honour your father and your mother”. This is the first of God’s commandments that has a promise; that God will look after us.

There is something special about the family unit in God’s eyes. He values it highly and wants it to be a harmonious and loving environment where we are helping each other and honouring each other. This week, the thread looks at the role parents play in the development of the family unit.

My father was an elite Rugby Union player. He played for the Australian Wallabies (back in the 70s). In order to get there, he had to undergo rigorous training and be disciplined in all that he did. Unfortunately, back then they didn’t have the same advances in training techniques or nutrition that we know of today, but he still found a way! His whole philosophy was to push himself as hard as his body could take. Like any elite athlete, he disciplined his body to improve and adapt to the imposed demands he placed on it. If he would have just simply maintained his regular lifestyle, he would never have gotten to the international stage of the sport.

But there had to be a line. Push yourself too hard, and you can injure yourself and do irreparable damage. He needed to engage in the right kind of training (physically, mentally, and spiritually) for him to succeed.

In this week’s bible reading (Ephesians 6:1-4) God acknowledges the disciple that is required by parents to their children but also warns of making sure that children are brought up and “trained” in the right way. The right training is essential for the spiritual growth of children and is more important today, than ever before. God recognises this and urges adults too, to honour their children and bring them up with the right training.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honour your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise— "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Middle College News

Our Middle College students are very busy studying for exams and working on assignments as we approach the end of Semester 1. This signals a direct, explicit need for focusing on time management to ensure students can comfortably and confidently handle these added pressures. Some ideas for students and parents to consider:

  • No screens/devices in bedrooms
  • A visual calendar with times allocated to each subject area
  • Healthy breakfast each morning
  • Daily exercise
  • Minimum of 8 hours of unbroken sleep per night

We encourage all students and parents to explore some very helpful hints and tips to assist our young people in successfully navigating this time of year. A perfect place to start is ‘School TV’ located on the Pacific Lutheran College website. There are some wonderfully practical ideas that can be implemented easily in your home and can help your child to achieve their potential.

Maths and Problem-Solving Skills

To develop a basic understanding of maths children need to learn how to solve even the most difficult maths problems. These difficult maths problems are typically word problems. Teaching children how to solve word problems in maths is critical if they are to develop a full understanding of maths.

Children can typically solve a maths problem presented in numbers and equations. However, when the same maths problem is written in a paragraph or sentence format, many children have difficulty sorting the important information from the distracting information. It is not the fact they cannot solve the maths problem in most cases, it is simply they do not know a plan or strategy for solving the problem.

Strategies for Maths Problem Solving

The key to solving maths word problems is to have a plan or strategy, which works in any maths word problem-solving situation. For children having problems with maths word problems, the following 12 tips are provided to help children become good problem solvers.

  1. Read the problem carefully looking for clues and important information. Write down the clues, underline them, or highlight the clues.
  2. If necessary, rewrite the problem to help find these clues.
  3. Look for clues to determine which maths operation is needed to solve the problem, for example, addition, subtraction, etc. Look for key words like sum, difference, product, perimeter, area, etc. They lead to the operation needed to solve the problem.
  4. Look for what is needed to solve the problem, for example: how many are left, the total will be, everyone gets red, everyone gets one of each, etc.
  5. Use variable symbols, such as “X” for missing information.
  6. Eliminate all non-essential information by drawing a line through distracting information.
  7. Draw sketches, drawings, and models to see the problem.
  8. Is the word problem similar to previous work, if so, how was it solved?
  9. Develop a plan based on the information determined to be important for solving the problem.
  10. Carry out the plan using the maths operations which were determined would find the answer.
  11. Does the answer seem reasonable, if it does then it is probably ok – if not then check the work.
  12. Work the problem in reverse or backward, starting with the answer to see if you wind up with your original problem.

Problem Solving in Maths is Personal

The ability to solve problems is the foundation of mathematics. For a student in any year level in school, the road to understanding maths is through the problem-solving gateway. To develop the ability to solve problems, children need to make a personal connection as they visualise, touch, and see the problem.

All parents can do problem-solving at home. For example:

  • How many songs can be downloaded from iTunes for $7.75?
  • How much to charge a neighbor for cutting their grass?
  • How many cars do I need to wash to buy a new game, when charging $5.00 for each car wash?
  • How many marbles will fit inside a jar? First, determine the volume in the jar. Next, determine a reasonable estimate of the number of marbles by using similar materials.
  • When cooking, use fractions when baking.

Geometry Maths Problems

How about seeing what geometric shapes are in your home or outside the home? Geometry is everywhere in homes and nature, examples include:

  • Traffic Signs – octagon, square, round, etc.
  • Bicycles – using “Pi x d” to find the circumference or “Pi x r2” for the area of their bike’s wheels.
  • Windows – square, circle, rectangle, etc.
  • Walls, Floors, Ceilings – rectangle, right angles, perpendicular, parallel, etc.
  • Trees and Bushes – oval, 2 dimensional, 3 dimensional, Round, Cone, etc.
  • Swing Sets and other playground equipment – triangle, square, rectangle, etc.
  • Pythagorean’s Theorem – how to determine a right angle of anything being constructed to ensure the corner is exactly 90 degrees.

There are so many more possibilities, just get your children to look at what they see.

SPECIAL REPORT: Building Resilience Post Pandemic

Unfortunately, the mental health of young people has been significantly impacted by the pandemic. As many families settle back into pre-COVID routines, there seems to be a pervasive sense of optimism about what lies ahead.

Unfortunately, children and teens are not immune to what is now being termed the “psychological pandemic”. Young people are at risk of not achieving the primary demands of developmental tasks such as procuring independence, identity formation, as well as obtaining and maintaining peer relationships. What kids need most in the current environment is support, understanding, empathy, and encouragement from caring adults. They live up or down to the expectations we set for them.

If there is a remedy to the adversity caused by the pandemic, then it is the building of resilience. Resilience is the capacity to face, overcome, be strengthened, and transformed by adversity. There are 7 integral and interrelated components that make up being resilient that can help young people thrive and develop healthy coping strategies.

This Special Report explores the “7 C’s of Resilience” and includes suggested strategies on how adult carers can best facilitate them. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one, or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.

7-12 Interhouse Athletics Carnival

Last Friday, our Year 7-12 students enjoyed a fantastic day of sunshine and competition for our Inter-House Athletics Carnival. It was great to see so many students get involved on the day, with some tremendous individual efforts on show. Congratulations to Patrick Dale (Year 10) and Chantelle Page (Year 11) for breaking the High Jump records for their age divisions. A special mention also goes to Abby Novosel (Year 7) for equaling the High Jump record in her age group. We are looking forward to announcing our boys and girls age champions at our 6-12 Assembly next week.

It was such a tight contest that up until the relays, only 20 points separated 1st and 2nd place Houses and there were only 100 points between 1st and 4th. Congratulations to Wira House for storming home with the relays to take out the Champions Trophy for 2022. Spirit is a big part of our carnivals, and Bula were worthy winners of the Spirit Trophy this year for their support and encouragement for their team throughout the day. Thank you to all students and staff for a great event.

Monday Night Netball

We had three teams who made it through to the semi-finals with all three teams winning quite convincingly on Monday and now move to the Grand Finals on Monday 13th June.

A very big congratulations to the teams and coaches and we wish them the very best of luck for their grand final games. This is an excellent result for the school as this is the first time we have had more than one team make the Sunshine Coast Secondary School Netball Grand Finals.

Results were:

Our netball program has been a big part of the students’ netball journey and we hope this will encourage more students to join next year. We would like to see as many supporters as we can for our finals next Monday.

Grand Final Times are:

Rugby Union

Congratulations to our U13 Boys team for their fantastic performances this season, earning them a spot in the Semi Finals against Sunshine Coast Grammar. They fought valiantly in their Semi Final loss, stepping up to play for each other and showing great grit and determination. With only minutes to go, our boys scored to bring the score to 17-12, with an opportunity for a last effort to take the game. Unfortunately, there just wasn’t enough time to get back to the other end to score, but the boys should be extremely proud of the skill and passion they demonstrated throughout the match. They will compete in the Silver Plate final next week and we wish them all the best.

MATCH REPORTS – Round 9

U6 Mantarays - This was the re-match the Mantaray’s had been waiting for. A stronger, faster, better team took the field full of confidence coming off the game of the year last week. The highlights could have filled an ‘Eye of the Tiger’ Rocky montage. Unforgettable goals from Harvey, throw in precision from Emika and courageous tackling from Quinn all featured. Simply too much amazing play to cover it all. The adoring and vocal crowd gasped, and then silence fell amongst us as we witnessed our very own ‘hand of god’ moment as Ethan deflected the ball leading to a world class strike and goal from Hudson. People will be talking about this game for seasons to come. - Manager Mike

U7 Snappers - Snap snap snappers! 4-1 home game win. Liam got two goals, Elliott scored his first goal for the season and Xavier also got one! Big grins and great spirit. - Katie

U7 Stingrays - A ripper of a game for the team. They played so well! A huge improvement from them all as they showed great teamwork. Isaac was a superb goalie with lots of great saves and well-planned big kick outs. Finn defended the goals wonderfully kicking from the back line. Great attack from all the others as they ran and ran all game! Their happy faces at the end said it all. Manager - Kirsty

U8 Angelfish- The girls played their hearts out for 2 games! Two losses but we don’t mind, we were just excited to play as a full team for the first time all season! Congratulations to Abi, Meika, Dotti, Alaina and Isla who all won themselves an award today.

U9 Seahorses - The U9 Seahorses played 2 x back-to-back games with a draw on our first game and a loss on our second. Player of the match was Luella for game 1 and Autumn for game 2 - both giving it their all and showed great skills and sportsmanship. It was great to see the sun shining again and have the girls back on the field having fun. Our goal celebrations were on fire. Well done Seahorses and Coach Greg.  Manager - Gaby

U9 Sharks - Two games today for the Sharks. Two wins and a lot of grins! Game 1 Vs Stella Boom. Game 2 Vs Pacific Seahorses. All the boys played well, and we’re super proud they played two games back-to-back. Excellent defending and attack, and some sharp leg work to guard or recover the ball. A HUGE thank you to stand in Ref Michael Yared for being on field for both games! Manager - Katie

U11 Marlins - The team played really well in a very even game against Stella Scorchers. The final score was a draw 1-1. U12 Razors - Razors excited to be back on the field again after a long break, for a home game against the Bli Bli Jesters. Lots of energy and pressure on the opponents gave the Razors the upper hand throughout the game. First half delivered many opportunities and a few near goals. In the second half the Razors took their game to another level again, showing some beautiful team play and combinations all over the park, resulting in a solid 2-0 win. Great game by all players and promising more fireworks to be expected over the next weeks. - Manager Lara

U14 Barracudas - Barracudas remain top of the table with a 3-0 victory against Unity Mambas, with the Barracudas playing at home for the first time this season.  Barracudas used wind to their advantage in the first half to put away three goals within the first 10 minutes.  The game tightened up and remained 3-0 at full time.  Special mention: - Nick, Isaac, Manny, Talys and Carter. Coach - Sheldon

U15/16 Eels – The team went head-to-head with Caloundra Black and resulted in one of the closest and most nail-biting games so far this season. When the whistle finally blew, the scores were locked at 1-1. Special mention to Joey Harrys for extraordinary keeping. Well done Eels.
