Compass No 646 - May 2022

From the Principal

Appreciating the Generosity That Surrounds Us

A personal challenge could be to reflect each day on those people who have given generously to us.  At Pacific, we are immersed in a culture where people continuously give generously to each other.  Our parents volunteer to lead and support community and sports activities. Our teachers go well beyond what is expected to support the best possible growth and learning.  Our young people support each other and the broader community, give of their time to community events and activities, and make the most of opportunities.  Small things where people pause to listen carefully or share a smile of welcome, encouragement, enjoyment or appreciation are uplifting gifts.  Generosity makes communities rich and shines hope and possibility into lives.

Service is a core value of Lutheran school communities. Where we freely give of ourselves to use our gifts for the betterment of people, community, and the environment, we are living this value of service.  As we celebrate National Volunteers Week, we say thank you to the many people within our community who give so much on a daily basis in ways large and small.

Principal's Log

A very large thank you to everyone who gave their time and talents to make our Open Day on Sunday such a successful event.  The warmth of welcome, generosity of spirit, enthusiasm, and excitement of sharing the richness of learning and growth at the College was energising and uplifting.  Thank you to our staff, parents, and students who all gave generously of their time and themselves to welcome and share our community with a large contingent of new people to the College.  A standing ovation from a very appreciative Principal.

We look forward to enjoying the performance of Dracula this weekend.  There has been a growing buzz of excitement flowing from the cast and crew as they have completed their final preparations.  We wish Mrs Delaney, her team, and the cast and crew all the best.

The Year 4 students enjoyed their outdoor education experience last week. Through engaging in different types of activities in new settings young people grow in confidence, resilience, appreciation, independence, relationships, self-awareness, flexibility, connection to nature, their relationship with God, and their ability to live, learn and collaborate with different people.  We thank Mr Paul Brace for his very capable leadership and organisation and Chaplain Mark Hauser, Mrs Sarah Atkinson, Mrs Amanda Empson, Mr Joe Doran, Mrs Sharon Middleton, Mr Rob Belchamber, Ms Michelle Bourne, Mrs Leah Croke, and Mr Damian Davis for their guidance and support of the young people.

Thank you to our community for your support of the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. This is a simple and important way for us to serve our local community. Donations of non-perishable food and/or household items are being collected until Thursday 26th May.

We say a prayer of thanks for the generosity of spirit of the people of this community.

NAPLAN

PLC students have now completed NAPLAN Online testing, including catch-up testing for students who were absent last week. Student feedback was that the online testing was an improvement on the traditional booklet format and teachers supervising the tests observed prolonged student engagement and effort.

One of the benefits of digital NAPLAN testing is that questions adapt to student responses, becoming more or less difficult as the test progresses. The introduction of tailored testing will deliver more precise results and we look forward to receiving assessment performance information. Congratulations to the students on their positive engagement with the process.

Literacy Learning In Prep

By the end of the first year at school, the Australian Curriculum: English expects that most children will be able to:

  • Read short, predictable texts with familiar vocabulary and supportive images
  • Identify letters of the alphabet and use the sounds represented by most letters
  • Listen for rhyme, letter patterns, and sounds in words
  • Describe their likes and dislikes of familiar texts, objects, characters, and events
  • Communicate clearly and retell experiences with peers and known adults
  • Use familiar words, phrases and images to convey ideas in their own writing
  • Show evidence of sound and letter knowledge in their writing
  • Correctly form well-known upper and lower case letters and experiment with capital letters and full stops.

www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/English/Curriculum/F-10

Everyday contexts for literacy learning:

There are many ordinary, everyday opportunities when you can focus on your child’s vital literacy learning.

  1. Family leisure and entertainment: Demonstrate how you need to read every day- recipes, menus, magazines, sports scores, etc. Limit screen time and encourage singing songs and talking about the day.
  2. Family communications: Involve children when you telephone, email, Skype, text or write cards. Help your child to write their own invitations and thank you notes.
  3. Family celebrations: Involve children when you send and receive invitations, cards, letters, and emails.
  4. Doing hobbies and housework: Involve children when you are using recipes and cooking, making shopping lists and buying food, following directions for gardening, and using manuals for home maintenance. Help your child to follow the instructions for a new game or to assemble construction.
  5. Social and home life: Involve children when using the internet, reading catalogues or newsletters
  6. At home and in the community: Borrow from the local library, draw and create messages, buy plastic letters and make words.
  7. Parents as ‘teachers’: Talk about the letters of the alphabet- don’t teach them as a chant.

Children learn best when they are reading their favourite story, writing their name, etc.

Food for Thought

7 Ways to Raise a Well-Rounded Child

Research conducted by Carol Dweck, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, and a leading researcher in the field of achievement and success, discovered that a person's mindset can influence their behavior. When it comes to parenting, she suggests praising your child for his hard work instead of labeling him as "smart" or "talented."

People with a fixed mindset are usually reluctant to take on challenges because they believe their achievements come from innate abilities. Those with a growth mindset are usually more willing to face challenges with hard work because they believe in always learning new skills. "Above all, keep in mind that the grade is not what motivates a top student to succeed—it's his inner drive for learning," adds Borba.

Competitive Sport Results

Monday Night Netball

The rain held off for us all to enjoy Monday Night Netball with our first game for Term 2.

We have two more round games before finals. The results were;

SCISSA Volleyball

Well done to our Senior Boys Team 2 and Senior Girls Team 2 for their wins on Wednesday. We had the benefit of mostly home games this round and it was great to see our teams represent our College so well.

SCSS Rugby Union

Our Under 13 Boys fought hard but went down in a close match, 17-12, to St John’s Navy on Wednesday. It was a tied match just before the end when St John’s snuck over in the dying moments of the game. Our boys had the chance to even things just before the final whistle but couldn’t convert the opportunity into points. It was fantastic to see our players hold their own against the top team and we can’t wait to see them continue to progress this season.

Student accomplishments

Well done to the following students for their recent achievements in sport:

•          Naite Pethick and Rhys Veizer for their selection in the 13-15 years Independent District Basketball Team

•          Alexander Lee for his selection in the 17-19 years Independent District Football Team.

We wish these students all the best for their upcoming regional tournaments.

7-12 Inter-House Athletics Carnival

It is not too long until our Year 7-12 Inter-House Athletics Carnival! In the lead-up, we are organising some pre-events that won’t be held on the day of the carnival. The 1500m event for 10-19 years students will be held on Monday 30th at 7.30am on the Meridan AFL Fields, with the Javelin event for 13-19 years students being held at lunchtime on the Main Oval. Students need to email Mr West if they are interested in participating in these events.

We are looking forward to seeing all our students competing at our carnival on Friday 3rd June.

Mr Cameron West-McInnes, Head of Sport

Junior Sport

3-6 Pacific Lutheran College Athletics Carnival Information

The Primary Inter-house Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 2nd June (Week 7).

Due to the rain over the last week, we had to postpone the 1500m District trial. Information about the new date for this event is listed below.

10-12 Years 1500m – District Selection – Monday 30th May 2022 – (7.30am – 8.25am before school – Meridan AFL fields)

Students wishing to compete in the 1500m at the Independent District Carnival will need to attend this trial. Age champion and house points are not awarded for this event as this is only for district selection.

Sprint Nominations – At Carnival

Students will nominate to run in competitive races (heats) or a non-competitive race on the day of the carnival.  All competitive heats at the carnival will be timed using electronic timing gates with the times from these heats collated to determine the fastest times per age group. This will be used to determine age champion points and district selection in these events.

Brisbane Active Football Program

Coming up later this term, Pacific Lutheran College will host the Brisbane Active Football Program here on Friday afternoons on the College fields. Details regarding the program are included in the flyer here and below. If you are interested in your child being part of the program, please register by following the details below.
