Compass No 489 - March 2018

From the Principal

Celebrating Diversity

Harmony Day in Australia celebrates the richness of our cultural diversity. Celebrated on 21st March, it coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries that includes the oldest continuous culture in the world and those of our most recent arrivals. The melding of these cultures has contributed to an integrated multicultural Australia that is part of our national identity.

Each of us needs to play our part in being inclusive in our relationships and fostering commitment to a common set of Australian values where the dignity and wellbeing of each person is protected and preserved. In His commandment for us to “love our neighbour as ourselves”, God was instructing us to see all people as our neighbours.

Principal's Log

Typically at the end of Term 1, Year 5-12 students engage in the Pacific As A Peace Place audit. Through this survey, students have the opportunity to provide feedback about their wellbeing and the wellbeing of their peers. It includes the opportunity for students to report anonymously if they or their peers have been harassed or experienced bullying in either the face to face or the online environment. This audit supplements the proactive approaches the College takes to build a safe and positive learning environment. Each year the results of this survey have reflected very positively on the social culture of the College. We encourage all students and families to continue to be proactive in working with the College in standing up against and reporting instances where harassment occurs. Students are completing the audit in the final weeks of this term.

Every second year, parents, staff and students are invited to be part of the Quality Schools Survey conducted by Lutheran Education Australia. All staff and families of the College will be invited to provide feedback via this survey early in Term 2. Students from Years 5-12 will also be invited to complete the survey at the College. Details about the survey are provided later in this newsletter. Where families do not wish their children or themselves to be part of the survey, you are asked to notify the main office via email: PLCP-12@pacluth.qld.edu.au. The survey data will provide important information for the next phase of our strategic planning, which will happen in Term 3 of this year. All families are encouraged to participate where possible.

Congratulations to our Senior Boys SCISSA Soccer team who won their grand final yesterday against Glasshouse Christian College. This was Pacific’s fifth consecutive grand final appearance in the Senior Boys SCISSA Soccer and our third straight premiership. Well done to all players and thank you to Mr Brendan Delaney for coaching the team.

We congratulate Karla Lowe who was selected as a reserve for the Queensland Schoolgirls Water Polo team who will travel to Perth in May to participate in the Australian Schools Sport Championship. She and Cosette Winter were members of the successful Sunshine Coast 13-17 Years Water Polo Girls team that earned a silver medal at the Queensland Schools Water Polo Championships last week.

It was heartening to be at the Friends of Pacific meeting this week and feel the energy of the group who are well underway in the planning of the Aloha OCEANfest 2018. We thank all of the members of the OCEANfest planning group and particularly Mrs Teena Thompson who has taken on the role of OCEANfest Convenor for 2018.

We look forward to finishing the term strongly and the Cross Country Carnvial next Thursday. We thank God for the cultural diversity within our community and pray for respectful relationships in our homes, places of work and learning, in our country and across the world.

Important Notices

Quality Schools Survey 2018

This year, Pacific will be participating in collection of information through a survey managed by Research Australia Development and Innovation Institute (RADII). The College and Lutheran Education Australia will use the data collected to develop strategies and implement initiatives to improve the quality of education offered by Lutheran schools.

The survey period will commence early in May with invitations and individual survey links emailed early in Term 2.

  • Students from Year 5-12 will receive an invitation to participate through their school email address and will complete their surveys during class time.
  • Parents and staff will also receive an invitation to respond to the survey and we encourage all parents to participate in the survey.

All survey responses go directly to RADII and are not identifiable by the College, unless you wish to indicate that you want your feedback to be recognised. All data will be stored securely and the anonymity of all participants is assured.

Should you wish to not participate in the survey or you do not want your child to participate, please notify the main office via email: PLCP-12@pacluth.qld.edu.au by next Wednesday 28th March.

We encourage you to participate in the survey to provide valuable feedback to the College. When the feedback from the survey is received we will share the findings with you. Thank you for supporting the survey process.

King Without A Crown

Maybe you, like me, have been engrossed with the Netflix series ‘The Crown’. I can thoroughly recommend it if you have Netflix. The acting is great, the plot draws you in and the sheer determination of Queen Elizabeth to withstand all the pressures, scandals, and changes in the world is a captivating story. In the midst of it all she remains loyal to her duties and service of the crown as she leads Britain. This image of the crown, which is how each episode begins, is a central image for any member of royalty, any queen or king.

This Sunday, Christians celebrate another person of royalty. A king who claimed to be king of the Jews as well as of you and me. On Palm Sunday, Christians remember Jesus’ entry into the city of Jerusalem as Messiah. As a member of the royal family of David, Jesus rides into Jerusalem as king. However he is a different kind of king, he is a King without a Crown. He rides into the city not in a princely carriage, chariot or even on a stunning stallion or warhorse. This king rides through the cheering crowds on a borrowed donkey. Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem that day reflected the way he lived his life and how he saw himself as king.

People looked to Jesus wanting a great powerful man who would usurp the government but what they got was a servant king, an upside down Messiah, a poor humble man who would soon be killed and wear a different sort of crown, a crown of thorns. Some people got it, some didn’t. Today some people get who Jesus is and some people don’t. Some people look for a king who is all-powerful and uses force but Jesus shows us a different kind of king. A king that brings good news for us.

The good news is that God comes to us in unexpected, upside down ways. We want proof that he is the mighty king of the universe and God sends us a humble man on a borrowed donkey. We want God to get rid of all of our enemies. God says you can love them. You can do it. I’ll give you my love that sacrifices and kills itself for you and your enemies. We want God to do the spectacular, be the miracle maker and solve all our problems and hurts. God says trust me. I will lead you through it. You are not alone.

As we progress through this last week of term, may God give you hope. The hope that comes from a different sort of king, a King without a Crown.

International Women's Day

Last Friday, we celebrated International Women’s Day and held a breakfast at the College. Thank you to our community for supporting this event. A special thank you also to those who led different parts of this event including Mrs Leanne Bevis, Hospitality students, Mrs Emma Lendrum, Mrs Rhana Holt, Mrs Michiko Hauser, student performers, Mrs Aleisha Tuaine, Mr Steven Lake, Mr Adrian King, Mr Brendan Delaney, Grounds and Maintenance Staff, student leaders (Year 9 and 12 Captains) and Stephanie Keenan.

On Wednesday 14th March, Year 11 student Stephanie cut her ponytail and has been raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation. At the breakfast, she delivered the following speech:

“Good morning everyone. On the 14th March I turned 16 years old, this means a learner’s licence, one year closer to finishing school and another year of growing. It’s a milestone. But imagine being unsure whether you or your child would reach this milestone, or any milestone for that matter. Leukaemia affects people of all ages and currently there is no way to cure the disease. On the 14th March along with turning 16, my mother and I cut our hair to help raise money and awareness for leukaemia.

More than 13,000 people are diagnosed with a type of blood cancer each year. 4900 of these cases will prove to be fatal, making blood cancer the third biggest cause of cancer death in Australia.

In today’s society beauty is often generally based around looks. Many believe that beauty is made up from factors such as your height, your weight and even the length of your hair. I believe beauty revolves around none of these things and every single boy, girl, mother, father, adult and child deserves to feel beautiful. Being a young person with no hair because of the effects of chemotherapy, I can only imagine would be terrifying. I want to be able to give someone the gift of hair, something so simple that so many take for granted will mean the world to someone. In 16 years I’ve not wanted to cut my hair in fear of what others will think. However, the thought that I will be gifting someone the comfort of something I take for granted eases this fear.”

ANZAC Day

An important component in student development is inspiring in them to adopt a sense of civic responsibility to the communities they live in. Volunteering their time in assisting others is a pursuit that will benefit their personal growth and lifelong experiences immensely. A number of students took part in ANZAC Day services last year and we encourage students again to participate this year. Information about this event will be communicated next week.

Understanding Children’s Development

Understanding what our children are wrestling with and the developmental goals they are working towards will make their more ‘frustrating’ behaviours easier to deal with. Things will run smoother if we can give them the space and support they need by responding to situations with greater wisdom, clarity and with more appropriate consequences. ACM Awards Night

On Saturday night, two of our Speech and Drama students, Mia Bradshaw and Gabrielle Donato, received awards at the Australian College of Music (ACM) Annual Awards Night in Brisbane. It was a particularly special occasion as the ACM celebrated its 50-year anniversary.

Each year, Speech and Drama students have the option of sitting a practical exam with the ACM and in 2017 we had more than 30 students participate. All of those students received Merit or Honours. The highest scoring Honours students in the state are then eligible for gold and silver medals at the annual awards night.

Mia (currently in Year 8) was presented with a gold medal, topping the state in her grade level. Gabrielle, who graduated Year 12 in 2017, received a silver medal. Gabrielle’s outstanding performance in her Grade VII Speech and Drama exam was recognised by the University of Queensland in her tertiary application, providing her with a competitive rank to gain entrance to the Languages Department.

A huge congratulations to both Mia and Gabrielle and well done to all Speech and Drama students who put in an enormous amount of work with their exam pieces.

Senior Boys SCISSA Soccer

Our Year 11 and 12 SCISSA soccer team took on Glasshouse Christian College in the grand final yesterday afternoon at Maroochydoore Soccer Fields. They were down one nil early in the match but held in the game thanks to some excellent goal keeping by Tom Evans-Butcher. The rain came down at half time but this didn’t dampen the boys’ enthusiasm! They come out strong after the break and scored two goals to win the game 2-1. It was a sensational effort from all players. This was Pacific’s fifth consecutive Senior Boys SCISSA soccer grand final appearance and their third straight premiership. Congratulations to all players and a special thank you to Mr Brendan Delaney for coaching this team.

Pacific FC

For the second week in a row, many games were cancelled due to the weather and field conditions. Please keep your eyes on our communications this week, as there is some rain forecast.

We were lucky to get our U6s and U7s on the fields last Saturday. It was fantastic to see some first year players getting their boots dirty. We may have even seen some future Matildas or Socceroos!

Games This Week

Pacific FC is hosting home games this week, so please make sure you check game times, canteen rosters and field set-up/pack-up rosters. We need to make sure we fill all the spots. If you cannot do your rostered time, please ensure someone covers for you. Thank you to our awesome Pacific FC helpers that set up the canteen and the fields last weekend. The College’s mobile coffee machine got some great reviews.

Brisbane Roar Program (RAP)

We had an amazing turnout for the Brisbane Roar sessions and all children had a great time. We have the final session planned for this Friday. Keep your eyes on our communications for updates in case of rain.

Well done to all of our teams on their start to the season. The teams are developing and our community grows as a result. Grading will be completed this weekend.

As part of our Junior Leaders Program, our senior teams have been allocated a permanent team captain. Congratulations to the following players who have been elected for 2018:

  • PLC Thoroughbreds – Tayla Gorham;
  • PLC Arabians – Amie Hague; and
  • PLC Fillies –Ainslie Colton and Gabriel Rattey.

We also wish Tayla Gorham the best of luck as she embarks on her assessment as a ‘National C’ umpire. When completed, this qualification will allow Tayla to umpire any women’s junior games played within the Caloundra Association and to undertake competency assessments of our Junior Umpires.

Every week an encouragement award is presented to a player in each of our teams. Well done to our players of the week for 14th March:

  • PLC Thoroughbreds – Gabby Gorham;
