Compass No 480 - November 2017

From the Principal

Focusing on Hope

Throughout the world this year we have seen considerable change. There can be a sense of perpetual motion in our lives and the world at large. At Christmas time each year we are invited to pause and be still and focus on the hope that comes into our lives through the birth of Jesus. Jesus came into the world in a simple and ordinary way to bring hope to all people. It is a hope on which we can build our lives. This hope, which springs from His unconditional and gracious love for us, is constant and never changing. Our prayer is that this hope refreshes, uplifts and flows through you and your family and friends during the Christmas period this year.

Principal's Log

At the end of last week, we enjoyed celebrating as a community with the Year 12 students as they had their graduation, chapel and formal. We enjoyed their fun and joy as they finished in a warm dignified way. Considerable energy goes into the planning and leadership of these events and the final three days of alternative activities. We thank Director of Teaching and Learning Ms Sue Arahill, the Heads of Department and Year 12 teachers who, across this period, were marking and determining important final results, teachers and staff who led and supported final activities, Heads of House for their leadership of students in the final events and particularly to the Head of Senior College Students Miss Kim Stone, Miss Anita Morton and Mrs Leanne Bevis for their leadership and oversight of all activities.

At the Friends of Pacific AGM on Tuesday night we thanked our committee members, very capably led by Chairperson Mrs Jenny Lee, for the very significant contribution they have made over the past 12 months. We particularly recognise the outstanding contribution of outgoing members, Mr Ian Barnes and Mrs Mel Pollack. We thank Mr Ian Barnes and Mrs Mel Pollack for their service and all members of the committee for their support. We welcome new committee members and look forward to another great year in 2018.

At the end of this year we will be farewelling Ms Leisa Ilott, Mrs Julie Darr and Miss Anita Morton who all have made significant contributions over a long period of time at the College. Mrs Darr, who is moving from full time teaching, has given valuable support to children in her role as classroom teacher and Head of Learning Enrichment P-5. Her warmth and passion for learning inspired many young people to give their best. Miss Morton has made a valuable contribution as a classroom teacher, music teacher and, in recent times, as coordinator of our major events including graduation, closing and opening services. Her considerable musical expertise, high expectations and love of music provided a strong foundation for young people’s learning. Ms Ilott’s energetic and warm approach has enabled her to engage strongly with middle years learners who have enjoyed and benefitted from her as a teacher. Her enthusiastic coaching of sporting teams was also greatly appreciated. We will also be farewelling Mr Nico Prinsloo who will be taking on the role of Deputy Head of the Middle College at Nambour Christian College next year. Mr Prinsloo has effectively taught Mathematics and Science across the Middle and Senior College and was very generous in his time as he shared his expertise as a basketball coach. We congratulate Mr Prinsloo on his appointment and Miss Morton and Ms Ilott on their new roles in schools in Melbourne. We thank these teachers for the very significant role they have played in many children’s and families’ lives and in the shaping of a rich culture of learning at Pacific. We wish them all the best on their new paths.

We also farewell and thank contract teachers Mrs Jane Hughes (Drama and Dance), Mrs Helen Doyle (Library) and Mrs Karen Costa (Year 2) for their capable teaching and care of students. We thank Mrs Hughes for her generosity of time in leading various co-curricular dance opportunities for students.

At the start of next year we look forward to welcoming middle years teachers Mrs Linda Sydes who has experience in Education Queensland and interstate Catholic schools and Mrs Amanda Lowrie who has extensive experience as a teacher within Catholic schools. We will also be welcoming Mr Steven Lake who was previously Head of Music at Immanuel College and Head of Performing Arts in an international school. Mrs Kristy Astwick will be joining us from St John’s College as a Dance and Drama teacher, having previously successfully established a vibrant dance culture at a Gold Coast college. Mrs Paula Willis will be joining us from Canberra as a Hospitality teacher while Mrs Colleen Beattie is on maternity leave for Term 1 and Mrs Elizabeth Zernike, previously Head of Mathematics at Meridan State College, will be replacing Mrs Wendy Wescombe while she is on maternity leave for Semester 1. Mrs Rebecca Roebuck-Malone will be replacing Mrs Tina Cox who will be on long service for Semester 1. During this period, Mrs Rae Hall will be Acting Head of English and Miss Michelle McMillan will be the Acting Head of Teaching and Learning Middle College. Miss McMillan had led the Christian Studies department well for many years supporting the delivery of engaging, contemporary and meaningful learning opportunities for students. We thank her for this and wish her every blessing as she takes on this new role within the College where she will make very good use of her previous experience as Head of House and Head of Department. Mr Chris Bartlett from Concordia College will be taking on the role of Head of Christian Studies. We look forward to these experienced and capable staff adding to the culture of learning and student experience next year and wish Mrs Wescombe and Mrs Cox every blessing for the different paths they will walk in 2018.

We deeply appreciate all that staff, students and parents have contributed to make this year another year of great growth and increased opportunity for young people. Thank you for the important part each of you has played.

May God bless you all and keep you safe over the coming holiday period.

Dr Bronwyn Dolling, Principal

From the College Pastor

An End of Year Prayer

As we conclude exams and classes and participate in closing services, we give thanks for the school year, for all that has been achieved and for the gift of Christmas…

At the end of this school year we give thanks to you God.

For all the teaching and learning that has taken place. For the talents and gifts that have been shared and the challenges that have been faced. For the burdens that have been lifted and the hurts that have been healed. For the respect and care that has been given.

We give thanks for the friendships that have just begun and for those that have grown. For the faith that has been lived in our daily struggles. For the hope that has lifted our hearts on the dark days and for the love that has kept us going.

We give you thanks for our College community. Bless our families as we approach the holidays, may our time together leave us with memories to cherish. Pour your love on us so that we may return renewed and refreshed to continue our journey together in the New Year.

And finally, we give you thanks for the gift of Christmas. Help us to look beyond the shopping and the rushing to your Son, Jesus, who was born in a manger for us. Give us contentment this Christmas in the miracle of new birth. Surprise us again with the good news of your coming to earth as a human baby born into an ordinary family.

We pray this through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

First Communion and Confirmation 2018

Do you have a student entering Year 5 next year who would like to learn more about Holy Communion, the Lord’s Supper? Also next year Pastor Tim and Ray will be offering Confirmation for students in Years 6-9. Confirmation is a ministry in which young people learn more about the Christian faith and the Bible. If you have children in these age brackets who are interested in preparing for their First Communion or Confirmation, please register your interest to Pastor Tim at: tjarick@pacluth.qld.edu.au.

School Holiday Activities

The holidays do not need to be scheduled from dawn to dusk with every minute accounted for. Ask children for their input, you may be surprised by their ideas! Create a list and stick it on the fridge. Then when you hear the dreaded “I’m bored”, you can point them to the list and pick something to do. YACHTS

We chartered new territory in YACHTS this term as we engaged our love of wisdom to ponder life’s big questions. Our philosophical enquiry encouraged students to reason and think deeply through sharing stories.

Philosophy helps spiritual and moral development whilst also developing speaking and listening skills. Students had the opportunity to voice their thoughts, ideas and opinions while respecting the views of others during spirited group and paired discussions.

Many amazing questions were listed, categorised and used to develop an agenda for discussion. Initially, the first speaker led the discussion as they explained and clarified their point of view. Peers were then invited to build on what had been raised and to further shape the discussion. Students were encouraged and guided to think and reason collaboratively. They were given the opportunity to explore alternatives and expand horizons of thinking. It was a wonderful time for them to connect and interact with a focus on imagining possibilities, analysing concepts and reaching reasonable conclusions.

The students’ incredible exuberance and excellent focus made for brilliant learning.

Year 5 Sing Out Loud

This year, Year 5 students have been visiting IRT Woodlands Retirement Home on Friday afternoons to participate in the Sing Out Loud Program. Led by maestro Sharon Brown, students and their elderly ‘buddies’ came together to sing old classics such as ‘Singing in the Rain’, ‘Just the Two of Us’ and ‘Campdown Races’. The program was an invaluable opportunity for Pacific students to serve their local community, build relationships and form friendships. Year 5 students and their buddies thoroughly enjoyed their time together.

Speech and Drama Exams

This year, 32 students participated in Speech and Drama exams with the Australian College of Music, which is a record number for the College. Mrs Roslyn McIvor spent three days at Pacific individually examining students in areas of performance such as mime, improvisation, poetry, prose, plays, storytelling and theoretical knowledge.

Each student had the opportunity to do something special in their performance that was individual to them. They came up with so many original ideas and were truly entertaining. All students received a score within the range of Honours or Merit, which is an achievement of greater than 75%! This is a fantastic result and we congratulate all students on their results.

A special mention to Year 12 graduates Imogen and Gabrielle who did exceptionally well.

The end of semester piano concert was a great success with many families and friends attending to show their support for our students.

Twenty-one students from Years 1-10 performed a wide range of solos from some of the AMEB exam selections to popular and classical songs. All students performed wonderfully and had worked very hard to refine and perfect their songs.

Thank you to Mona and Noella Finney who did a fantastic job of narrating and hosting the concert. We look forward to the next concert and further developing student’s skills, knowledge and techniques in the New Year.
