Congratulations to Year 6 student Phoebe Shearer who has won the Year 5-6 investigation division of the UQ Science Competition with a project about making her own aquaponics eco-system. She has also won an Australian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology bursary to continue with her investigations.

The competition required students to develop an inquiry question, carry out an investigation and then write a report on the results. In Year 6 Biology during Term 3, students led individual inquiry experiments, which fit the criteria for the UQ competition. Many of the students’ projects were of such a high standard, the Year 6 teachers entered them into the UQ competition. We also acknowledge Isabella Lee, Jemma Simpson, Oliver Friend, Samuel Roberts, Orly Sillar and Thomas Ackhurst who did very well to meet the criteria for this state-wide competition.

As a winner of the state competition, Phoebe was nominated to enter the primary division of the national BHP Science and Engineering Awards. She is one of 24 finalists in this competition and will participate in a virtual awards celebration over the weekend. We congratulate Phoebe on this outstanding achievement and look forward to hearing the results of the competition, when they are announced in February 2021.
