When we are put under pressure or experience hurt our values of compassion and kindness can be tested. Our brains can quickly go into the flight or fight mode and we can find ourselves building walls rather than understanding. By pausing and seeking to understand the perspective of the other person or walking alongside we shift our energy to solution finding. Our focus shifts to the building of relationship and coming together to find a better way forward.

Within the Bible, God encourages us to respond to hurt with compassion and to bless those who hurt or insult us.  Rather than building walls, God invites us to pause and pray. He invites us to walk around the wall and look with compassion to develop understanding of a new way to see the situation. As we pause and pray, we can ask for forgiveness for the hurts we have caused and for insight into how we might move forward. The good news is that God forgives us readily and promises to be with us through all of life’s experiences. Empowered by His love for us, we can look beyond our fears and hurt and see the need in those we encounter and walk with compassion.
