Have you ever been asked to walk in somebody else’s shoes? Last Wednesday, the Year 6 students were asked that very question when they attended the ALWS Awareness Day. The ALWS (Australian Lutheran World Service) is an organisation that helps refugees in developing countries get back on their feet. The day provided an educational and insightful experience for our Year 6 students. We learnt so much about how people in poorer countries live by putting ourselves in their shoes and walking their way for a day.

Susan Hawke, an amazing woman who has lived and worked in developing countries all over the world, ran the program. We were astonished by how far people had to walk every day just to collect food and water and how much further they had to travel to get to school each day. Some of the group also took up the challenge of only having a dry biscuit for morning tea and some rice with curry for lunch to see how difficult it is for people in foreign countries to live with so little food.

Overall this was a terrific experience. Walk in someone else’s shoes today…
