It was heart warming to see the way in which communities engaged with the commemoration of ANZAC Day and to be part of the Pacific community as we engaged in a number of events on the day. Our College Captains, Alli Whitmore and Sam Wilson read the poem In Flanders Fields at the poignant Kings Beach Dawn Service, with many staff, students and parents in attendance. Staff and students then took the opportunity to show their respect by participating in the Caloundra Anzac Day March and laying a wreath. Our Year 6 students and teachers joined with the Centaur retirement community in their remembrance activities. Staff and students also engaged in services led within the College. We are deeply appreciative of parents Ms Terri-Ann Howard and Mr Duncan Buchanan who spoke at our Year 6-12 service and to Mr Gary Phillips from the RSL who led the Ode and remembrance component of the service. We thank our musicians for the important part they played in our services and particularly Jared Solti who played the Last Post with skill and courage. We thank all parents, staff and students for the gift of time as they remembered and in particular Mr Brendan Delaney, Mrs Leanne Bevis, Pastor Tim Jarick and Year 6 teacher Ms Leisa Ilott for their leadership and organisation.

There was a lot of heart evident as students competed and cheered each other on during last Friday’s Cross Country Carnival. Congratulations to all students who participated and gave their best and well done to Wira House who won both the Year 3-6 Carnival and the Year 7-12 Carnival and to Bula House who won the House Spirit Award at the Year 7-12 Carnival. Thank you to Mr Darren Hooper, Mr Brett Kersnovske, Mrs Natalie Campbell and PE staff for their leadership of the day and also to Mr Stuart Pohlner who has helped students to build their fitness through the running club.

We also extend congratulations to the two senior teams who have been selected to proceed to the finals in the Mayor’s Telstra Technology Challenge. One team is designing an app to assist people to manage their emotions and another group is designing a device that will assist in improving the way people can care for their lawns.

As advised by email earlier this week, it is with mixed emotions that we share that Mrs Sue Zweck has accepted a position as Service Manager for Queensland Lutheran Early Childhood Services (QLECS) from the start of Term 3. This is a wonderful next step for Mrs Zweck and a great blessing for the many children who attend QLECS services across the country who will benefit greatly from her expertise. Mrs Zweck has given outstanding service to this community over the past 17 years and we look forward to celebrating her achievements with her towards the end of this term.

Tickets are now on sale for Sideshow the Musical. The performance, which will be at the Caloundra Civic Centre on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th May, promises to be yet another thought provoking and thoroughly entertaining production.

Parent, teacher and student conferences are an important part of building the most effective learning environment for young people. We thank the parents, students and staff of our senior students who have taken part in these important learning experiences this week.

We give a prayer of thanks for the service of our defence men and women and their families and ask for God’s help to make the most of the gifts we have been given for the betterment of others.
