We congratulate our 2018 Year 4 YACHTS students who were awarded Highly Commended at the finalist ceremony of the Queensland Museum’s Hatchery Crusaders Project in Brisbane this week. Students explored ‘The Marine Plastic Problem’ and created a culminating art sculpture, ‘The Plastic Tomb’, featuring the loggerhead turtle, which is now an endangered species. Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Science and Arts, Hon Leeanne Enoch presented students with the award and commended them for their efforts. Well done to Carter Kiernan, Jemma Linfoot, Jemma Simpson, Max Zorgdrager, Jack Kane, Isabella Lee, Emma Loh, Phoebe Shearer, Will Moffitt, Samuel Roberts and Kahlia Taylor and thank you to Mrs Christine Doyle for her leadership of these students and also to Mrs Denise McMahon who provided artistic support.

Learning through making mistakes and constructive feedback is an important life skill. There are rich opportunities for learning as Prep – Year 5 students and their families engage in interviews and Middle and Senior College students complete their assessments. Reflection around the learning journey, a celebration of progress and learning through mistakes builds lifelong habits of resilience, persistence and a strong sense of efficacy. We encourage all families to engage in solution focused conversations of ‘next steps’ to improve learning outcomes over the coming week.

At the Friends of Pacific meeting on Tuesday night we enjoyed a presentation from our Head of Learning Enrichment P-5, Mrs Sara Taverner, who spoke about the way she is leading the growth of students with a diversity of needs. As well as the direct support of students and parents, a key focus of the Learning Enrichment program at the College is the continual growth of staff capacity to extend and support students through classroom learning and specialist programs. In particular, in recent years there has been a continuing expansion of opportunity for gifted and talented students. We are excited to see students benefitting from the full range and diversity of learning opportunities available at the College. We thank our teachers and the Learning Enrichment team for their creative and purposeful leadership.

We give a prayer of thanks for the richness and diversity of our community. We pray for peace around the world and for God’s comforting hand for all those who are suffering grief.
