With changes to the structure of our Kayaking program in 2018, Year 5-12 students were invited to join one of the schools most consistently successful teams.  A dedicated group of paddlers of all skills levels joined Mr Gary Graves on Monday and Thursday afternoons at Lake Kawana after school in Term 3 and 4.

Their training culminated in individual success for a number of students who attended the Qld School Marathon Canoe Championships in August.  Our main event this year was once again the Qld Schools Canoe Sprint Championships.  The many individual successes of our paddlers lead to PLC once again being awarded the Champion School for this event.  This is the 14th consecutive year PLC has taken out this title and an outstanding effort considering our reduced team numbers this year.

This unique program is available to our students due to the time and effort put in each year by Mr Gary Graves.  This year Mr Graves was awarded volunteer awards for his efforts by both Paddle Qld (formerly Qld Canoeing) and our local community for his dedication to the sport.  The PLC Sports community sincerely thank Mr Graves for his commitment to this program.  We also acknowledge the staff support of Mr Ben Dutton (Repairs), Mr Chris Mundey and Mrs Leah Croke (training) and parent helpers throughout this year.

PLC Kayak State Champions

Congratulations to the PLC kayaking team for winning the schools Queensland Sprint Kayaking Championships held on Sunday 21st October at Wyaralong Dam, Bromelton. It was great to see a number of new paddlers do a wonderful job in representing our College. Well done to everyone who got up bright and early on a Sunday morning to arrive at the venue by 7am. It was great to see PLC students win a swag of medals and in particular well done to those students who stood on the podium for the first time. A big thank you to a number of parents who helped out regularly throughout the season washing, loading and tying down boats. A special thanks to Mrs Croke and Mr Mundey for attending training, Mike Gilliman for coaching the students, Jack Gothorp for helping with water safety, Mr Dutton for repairing numerous craft, Mr Jones for towing the kayaks and to Mr Martin Roth who helped maintain and repair the trailers. A fantastic team effort and I look forward to coaching the students in 2019.
