It has been a busy couple of weeks of sport for students in the Junior College with swimming trials, swimming carnival and the start of SCISSA sport.

3-6 Inter-House Swimming Carnival

Students and staff were greeted with a beautiful, sunny day last Thursday for the 2021 Primary Swimming Carnival held at Beerwah Aquatic Centre. It was great to see a high level of house spirit displayed on the day and thank you to the Year 6 students who led their houses in war cries and cheering during the day.

Congratulations to Wira house who were crowned the 2021 champion house at the end of the carnival. The final points at the end of the day were:

  • Wira – 2635
  • Bula – 2336
  • Mumba – 2198

Students who have been successful in being selected to represent PLC at the upcoming Independent Primary Swimming Carnival will be notified via Operoo in the coming days. The carnival is scheduled to be held at St Andrews College on Friday 19th February. Unfortunately, there will be no parent spectators allowed at both the District and Regional Swimming carnivals this year due to space limitations and the large number of spectators that normally with to attend these events.

4-6 SCISSA

Students in Year 4 – 6 will begin their SCISSA sport experience this week with two “come and try” sessions organised. All students have selected two sports they would like to try on Thursday 11th February and during our first afterschool training session on Monday 15th February. After these sessions’ students will make their selection for what sport they would like to play in Semester One.

Dance is once again a popular choice but is limited to 25 students due to space within the dance studio at the college. A selection afternoon will be used if numbers exceed this limit, with students in Years 5 and 6 given preference. Please discuss this with your child if they are thinking of selecting dance as their sporting option.

Afterschool training commences next Monday 15th February and runs each Monday afternoon through to Week 8. Afterschool training dates for 4-6 SCISSA can be found on the College Calendar. Training is compulsory for all students on these dates. If your child is unable to attend a training session for any reason, please email PLCsport@pacluth.qld.edu.au to advise of their absence. Attendance rolls are taken at each of these sessions.

Run Club

Starting next Tuesday 16th February students will have the opportunity to join the PLC Run Club which will once again be pounding the pavement each Tuesday morning before school.

Run Club is open to all students from Years 3 -12 and is aimed at improving student’s confidence in distance running and aerobic performance. The program will run each Tuesday morning with a strict 7:15 start during both Term One and Two. Students will spend Term One preparing for the school cross country carnival and will continue into Term Two with the Caloundra Foreshore Run in June rounding out the Run Club season.

If your child would like to be part of the PLC Run Club, please send a short email to Mrs Kim Kiernan kkiernan@pacluth.qld.edu.au to register your child’s interest.

PLC Sports Hub Excursion

Last Friday afternoon a group of students from Year 8 -12 had the opportunity to travel up to the Kawana Sports Hub. A selected group of students who were highly involved in PLC sport during 2020 were provided this opportunity.

The short excursion provided students with the opportunity to engage in Science and evidence learning under the guidance of expert professionals. Students were able to participate in a range of warm up activities, various strength, power and speed tests as well as some clinical testing, including an ACL test using video movement diagnostics.

Students really enjoyed the experience, and we look forward to continuing this association with the Sports Hub in coming years.
