As we participate in Harmony Day this week, we celebrate the cultural diversity of our country. All of us benefit from the richness of culture that comes from the mix of Indigenous people and people from across the world who, at various times throughout Australia’s history, have added different traditions and beliefs as they have become a part of our Australian community. Seeing the commonality of humanity in our neighbourhoods, country and across the globe helps us to reach out and create community where we all belong and diversity is celebrated.

This week we have seen people of different faiths and cultures come together to offer support in response to the tragedy in Christchurch. We have seen New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Arden lead a country to stand with compassion and strength. It is the voices of compassion, respect and kindness that we need to pay greatest attention to in our homes, work places, social groups, country and world. The simple encouragement to “love our neighbour as ourselves” should ring loudest of all.
