Driver Awareness and Safety offered in the Senior Personal Development Program

A focus in the Senior Personal Development Program is supporting student choices in the area of personal wellbeing and safety. Part of this is to provide education, learning opportunities and practical experience in students’ preparation for applying for their Learner and Provisional Driver’s licenses and confidently and safely getting behind the wheel.  On Wednesday 5th October, Year 10 students participated in the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) Program.  The one-day workshop provided students with the tools and understanding they need to see themselves as active, responsible road citizens.  A range of activities front-loaded students’ understanding of road safety and gave them tools, habits, and motivation to take action and stay safe on the roads, both as drivers and passengers throughout their lives.

Year 12 students will also have the opportunity to engage in a QLD Police and Law presentation during the Alternate Days Program.

Year 10 Peer Mentoring- Organic Growth of Student Leadership and Agency

Over the year, a small group of Year 10 students raised their hand for the challenge of starting a Year 10 Peer Mentoring Leadership team, with the purpose of growing agency within their PCGs and Houses and supporting the transition for Year 7 students into the Middle College and throughout the year. Over the course of the year, this small group has now evolved into 25 student members from Year 10, who are excited to be involved in supporting the Year 9 cohort and their transition into Senior College in 2023, commencing with their first of many Leadership Days, with a focus on peer mentorship in Week 9.

The Year 10 Peer Mentor group meet fortnightly to set small stretch goals for the term and hope to share their journey with 6-12 staff later this term.  Their long-term goal is for PCG to be more student-led and driven, with students supporting students.

I look forward to working with the Year 10 Peer Mentors this term.
