Sunshine Coast Council: Parks and Gardens High School Work Experience and Career Program (Years 10 – 12)

The Parks and Gardens Branch at Sunshine Coast Council has developed a High School Work Experience and Career Program open to students in grades 10, 11 and 12. The aim of the program is to encourage and support young, energetic and enthusiastic individuals to explore future career options within Council’s Horticulture, Arboriculture, Turf and Irrigation, Nursery Operations, Infrastructure Maintenance or Administration teams. Students who apply will come on board with Council work teams for a 5-day period. They will experience first-hand basic technical skills, while also developing transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, interpersonal skills and confidence.

Students who successfully complete the program will receive a Completion Certificate and will be eligible to apply for traineeship programs and vacant positions within the Parks and Gardens branch once they graduate from high school. Any future employment opportunities will provide career progression advantages within the Parks and Gardens Branch and ensure skills and experience can be expanded.

Please refer to the attached flyer and/or following video for further insight into the program and what it entails. For students interested in applying, please visit the SCC Careers Website.

Students can pursue a subject of interest, experience life as a uni student and enhance their academic skills as they blend high school learning with university study. For the first time this year, Year 10 students are eligible to apply to study Headstart in Semester 2 (commencing July). Completing Headstart in Year 10 will advance students’ learning and set them up for success in their future studies.
