Last Thursday, 33 boys from Years 7-12 travelled to the Caboolture Rugby Union Club to represent Pacific in the Moreton Bay Rugby 7’s carnival. Pacific entered teams in three divisions – Under 13’s, Under 15’s and Under 18’s. The carnival involved schools from the Sunshine Coast, Caboolture and Brisbane.

The Under 15’s team played four games during the day. Many of the students in this team had not played much rugby prior to this carnival. Whilst the team did not record a win on the day, their skills continued to improve throughout the carnival, losing one game by only a point and another by only two points.

The Under 18’s team played two pool games against Bray Park High School and Australian Christian College, recording victories against both of these teams. Pacific finished first in their pool and progressed through to the semi final. In the semi final, Pacific played St Patrick’s from Gympie. The Pacific Under 18’s were leading throughout the match and looked to be progressing through to the grand final. However, St Patrick’s scored right at the end of the game to snatch the victory from Pacific. Even though the team didn’t reach the grand final it was still a pleasing effort.

The Under 13’s were our success story of the carnival. They played pool games against Caboolture State High School and Tullawong State High School, which they both won, allowing them to finish top of their pool. The Under 13’s progressed into the semi finals and played Unity College. The were able to record yet another win against Unity to then qualify for the grand final against Morayfield State High. The Morayfield team contained some massive players who towered above the Pacific players. Pacific used their speed and skill to score two quick tries to take an early 12-0 lead, however, Morayfield were able to use their superior size and strength to score a number of quick tries to take back the lead. The end result was a five try to two victory to Morayfield High. The Under 13’s played outstandingly all day and showed determination and courage in all games against much bigger opponents.

Thanks to Mr Andrew Block and Mr Josh Danzey for coaching on the day. Without their help, Pacific would not be able to play in carnivals such as these.
