Last week we had four Pacific teams involved in the Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools basketball competition finals.

The Junior B Boys took on Mountain Creek State High School (MCSHS) in a tough match. The MCSHS team went through the season undefeated and Pacific had only lost one match leading up to the final. Despite a late charge by the Pacific boys in the fourth quarter, MCSHS proved too good in the end and won 29-21, with Pacific claiming silver.

The Junior A Girls played a repeat of the 2014 final, against Sunshine Coast Grammar School (SCGS). The girls put up a great fight throughout the whole match, coming within four points of SCGS with only two minutes left in the game. However, with one girl injured and one key player getting fouled out, SCGS managed to hold on and win the game.

The Senior D Boys also came up against MCSHS in the open division. Last time these teams played against each other, it was a tight match and ended in a draw. This time however, the Pacific team had no intention of settling for a tied match. The boys took an early lead, before MCSHS got within two points mid-way through the second quarter. From then on, the Pacific team dug in and prevented MCSHS from scoring in the second half, going on to defeat MCSHS 35-13 and taking out the Championship Shield.

In the Senior B Girls grand final, Pacific came up against Matthew Flinders Anglican College (MFAC). Both teams had defeated each other throughout the season and the final decider proved to be another close affair. After Pacific’s early lead, MFAC rallied in the final quarter to come within only two points with a few seconds left. However, the Pacific girls held on to claim the college’s first ever basketball grand final victory.

Well done to all teams who represented Pacific in the finals. A special congratulations goes to the Senior Girls and Boys teams for their premiership-winning performances. Thank you to Mr Scott Crompton, Mrs Michi Hauser, Mrs Tanya Graves, Mrs Leah Croke, Mr Damien Evans, Mr Nico Prinsloo, Mr Morr and Justin Sayson for their expertise throughout the season.
