Cancer Council Morning Tea

In Week 6 of this Term, the Year 10 Hospitality students took part in hosting ‘Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea’ to raise much needed funds for those impacted by cancer. Their aim was to make this morning tea really count by producing delicious food for PLC staff to purchase, to fundraise as part of this nationwide community event.

Contributing to this event initiative by the Cancer Council meant that PLC could help to make a difference – big or small for those impacted by cancer and bring us closer to a cancer free future. 1 in 2 Australians are diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. With a real purpose to make a difference with food, students took this task on with great responsibility.

The students worked in the weeks leading up to the event to plan and design their chosen savoury and sweet food items. This included researching and trialing recipes and adapting designs to meet intended needs. The students took on the role of events manager and worked as co-agents within a team to plan and promote the event for it to be most successful.

The kitchen was a very busy space on the days of the event as students worked meticulously to follow their work plans and produce tasty, nutritionally balanced, visually appealing food all whilst catering to a large scale. On the day of the event, students helped put together morning tea boxes containing a variety of sweet and savoury items. They volunteered their time to sell these beautiful boxes at lunchtime outside the Coral Café for $5 and $10 as well as meet pre-order requests.

The feedback and response from staff were outstanding as staff enjoyed Year 10’s tasty treats. It was a very successful event with over $600 raised. All funds were directly donated to Cancer Council Australia. We are very proud to know that every dollar kindly donated will help fund life-saving research, prevention and support programs.
