Defence Work Experience Program (Years 10-12)

The Defence Work Experience Program (DWEP) is a national Youth Program that provides young Australians with an interest in a Defence career, and the opportunity to gain exposure to a range of job roles available within Defence and the Australian Public Service. Defence work experience activities are designed to be hands-on and interactive so that young people can make informed career decisions.

The following programs are now taking applications online with others to follow as the year progresses:

Applications may close before the advertised date if large volumes are received. Students are advised places are limited and are strongly encouraged to submit complete and considered applications as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. The DWEP works alongside ADF Units to bring students a valuable experience with serving personnel and therefore unforeseen changes to operational commitments may result in a placement being changed, postponed and/or cancelled at short notice. Please go to the DWEP website for updates on the program and to apply.

Young Endeavour Youth Scheme (Years 10-12)

Applications are now open for Young Endeavour youth development voyages in 2023. Since 1988, more than 14,000 young Australians aged 16-23 have joined the national sail training ship Young Endeavour on a life-changing voyage.

Each voyage in the Young Endeavour is a unique and challenging experience. The immersive nature of the program encourages participants to rapidly develop interpersonal, leadership and teamwork skills which are readily transferable to their life as they move into adulthood.

The program is delivered by the professional Royal Australian Navy staff crew who ensure that the highest standards of safety are maintained.

Voyage fees and conditions will apply to successful applicants. A limited number of scholarships are available.

Medical research work experience programs (Years 11 and 12)

Each year, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute runs a series of work experience programs for school students. These programs are a fantastic opportunity for students who are interested in science or medicine; to give them a chance to see, and in some cases participate hands-on in medical research projects in progress in a professional medical research laboratory. There are one-day programs and 3-day programs, all offered during school holidays. Applications are open now, and the programs are in high demand, so it is very competitive to secure a place.
