Service – A Way of Being
Service – A Way of Being
Living with a servant heart sees us naturally responding to the needs of others. Simple things like greeting people with a smile and listening genuinely to the response “about how they are” can make a huge difference in people’s lives. Living for a purpose beyond ourselves is an important part of our wellbeing. Playing an active role in our families and community enables us to strengthen relationships, grow capacity and develop purpose. At Pacific, we are blessed to have so many parents, students and staff who have servant hearts. Every dimension of College life is enriched because the people of this community give generously of themselves.
The parable of the three people who were each given a different amount of money to look after, reminds us of the importance of using our gifts and talents in service to others. The two people who were given 5 and 2 talents returned double their value, while the one who was given only one talent was afraid of losing it and buried it for safekeeping. Where we use our gifts and talents freely and for the good of others, there is a multiplier effect. Others grow, we grow, and possibility keeps expanding. Where we hold things firmly to ourselves, growth is stifled. Living with a servant heart enables us to live with expansive generosity and hospitality that generates hope and possibility.
