Welcome to the start of Term 4 and a particular welcome to parents and students who are new to the College. Next week, we welcome back Middle and Senior College teacher, Mrs Abbie Blessing from maternity leave. We wish Mrs Jasmin Steven every blessing as she enjoys some well-deserved long service leave this term. Ms Rebecca Abnett, Ms Sue Arahill and Mrs Patricia Hosking will be teaching Mrs Steven’s classes through this term.

We look forward to the Soiree Amongst the Stars on Saturday, October 29th.  It is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together as community and enjoy great food, music and fun.  Our hospitality team will be providing canapes throughout the evening.  Music entertainment provided by Luke Dickens and his band (runner up in the 2008 season of Australian Idol) will add to the ambience of the evening and provide the opportunity to get our bodies moving. This is an 18+ event and tickets can be purchased here.

At the end of last term, it was a privilege to attend the Senior Ensemble Concert where Senior students were able to showcase their talents and we were able to express our appreciation to the Year 12 students for their years of service to our music program. We thank all of our senior musicians and in particular our Year 12 students for the strong contribution they have made to the growth of the program. Thank you to our parents for their support of the evening and their encouragement over many years of practice, rehearsals and performances. Thank you to our Music team of Mrs Carlie Purkis, Mrs Helen Williams, Mr Paul Cusick and instrumental teachers for their leadership.

It was great to see two of our Year 4-6 netball teams take the opportunity to compete in the Primary Schools Cup in Bundaberg over the holiday period. The PLC Jewels finished 1st in Division 3 and placed 15th overall in the Championship Division, placing them in the top 15 schools in Queensland.  The PLC Gems also performed well in Development Division 4.  Congratulations to Georgia Frohmuller who was named one of the top 3 umpires for the tournament.  Thank you to our parents for your support and to our umpires Georgia Frohmuller and Kayla Sanderson and coaches Mrs Michelle Dufty and Ms Caity O’Keefe.

We wish our Year 9 students all the best as they engage in their two-week Outdoor Education experience next week.  The experience provides unique opportunities to grow confidence and personal capabilities as new skills are learnt, challenges are worked through, relationships are built, and wellbeing enhanced through connection to nature.  We thank Mr Paul Brace for his organisation and Mrs Michelle Bourne, Mrs Holly Gricks, Ms Rebekah Horsey, Mrs Emma Lendrum, Mr Lachie Buchanan, Mr Chris Bartlett, Mr Rob Belchamber, Mr Brett Kersnovske, Mr Liam Jacka, Mr Mark Hauser, Mr Duncan McNee, Mrs Leah Croke and Mrs Sharon Middleton for their leadership of the experience.

Our Year 7-12 students will be involved in exams throughout this term. We wish our Year 11 and 12s calm and purposeful minds as the Year 11 students complete their exams next week and our Year 12 students prepare for their upcoming external exams. For our Year 7-10 students, it is important that they study for their exams from the start of the term in a progressive way.  Developing effective ongoing study routines and habits is an important part of the learning for our Year 7-10 students.  Teachers will be providing advice about strategies for students to be using through this time.

We look forward to welcoming many new students to our Middle College Orientation Day next Tuesday 11th October. Families of Year 5 and 6 and new Year 6, 7 and 8 students for 2023 will have received an email from the College detailing the arrangements for the day.

May God grant us servant hearts that inspire hope and possibility as we serve each other and the broader community.

Dr Bronwyn Dolling, Principal
