Compass Review 2024 Growing and Celebrating Together

We are excited to share the Compass Review 2024 with our community. In a new approach, the Compass Review celebrates the progress that has been made towards our 2023-2026 Strategic Plan. The Compass Review 2024 celebrates staff, students and parents who have led or contributed to initiatives throughout the year. Attached to each article are symbols and descriptions of the strategic intents that are being developed to assist families to build better understanding of our strategic thinking and growth. Stories of Alumni are inspiring with each story reflecting how qualities and capacities grown through immersion in Pacific’s culture have continued to be developed and grown beyond school.

A key part of the 2023-2026 Strategic Plan is to increase the agency of staff, students and parents to contribute to the ongoing enhancement of learning at the College. We hope that through reading the Compass Review 2024 and being better informed, you will celebrate the progress and better understand ways in which we as staff, students or parents can continue to engage to enhance learning and opportunities within the College.

Principal’s Log

All families will receive a copy of the Compass Review 2024 this afternoon through their oldest child. We congratulate and thank staff, students, parents and alumni that have contributed to the initiatives and the articles. We particularly thank our Community Liaison and Communications Officer, Mrs Samantha Barrass for producing this year’s publication.

Earlier this week we farewelled the staff and students of Seishin Gakuen. The strong connections that had grown over the past week were clearly evident as we said farewell. The opportunities for growth in understanding of culture and global perspectives through this experience were very powerful. We thank our host and shadow students and families for their hospitality and welcome. We particularly thank Mrs Michiko Hauser and Mrs Kana Chan for their outstanding leadership of this valuable experience.

Students continued to perform very well as groups and soloists at the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod, highlighting the growth and strength of the music program at the College. We congratulate all those who participated and congratulate and thank our Head of Instrumental Music, Mrs Helen Williams, Head of Music, Mr Paul Cusick, Ms Krist-Elle Hill and our instrumental staff for an outstanding celebration of musical talent.

We congratulate all students who took part in the Australian Mathematics Competition this week and thank Mrs Wendy Wescombe for her organisation of this event. We look forward to next week’s Nature Quest Adventure as we celebrate Science Week. All students across K-12 will have the opportunity to learn more about their connection and interdependence with the environment as they engage in the adventure of a scavenger hunt around the College. We thank Mrs Claire Richards and her science team for the leadership of this activity.

Congratulations to our Junior Debating Team on their second debate win at Sunshine Coast Grammar School on Wednesday night. They were on the affirmative team for the first time arguing for the topic- Self-service checkouts at supermarkets should be banned. Congratulations to Evie Weule, Vienna White, Mia White and Evie Schenck who have eagerly used lunchtimes to get debate ready. Thank you to parents and the continued mentorship of Mrs Jodi Nielsen, Mr Noah Beasley and Miss Makani Campbell.

We are looking forward to the Friends of Pacific trivia night- Battle of the Bands - Friday 16th August 2024.  Thank you to our sponsors and Friends of Pacific for the tremendous energy and effort that has gone into planning this event.

We thank God for the gifts and talents he has given each of us and this community. We pray that he would guide us to celebrate our and each other’s strengths and use our gifts to improve the lives of people and the environment.

Year 12s Celebrate 100 Days Until Graduation with Special Breakfast and 'Comfy' Clothes Day

This week, the Year 12 cohort celebrated 100 days until graduation with a special breakfast and a 'Comfy' Clothes Day, hosted by the 2024 College Captains and Vice Captains. This celebration was more than just a day of comfort—it offered the Year 12 cohort an opportunity to create memorable experiences as they approach the end of their journey at Pacific. The idea of a comfortable (comfy) clothes day was highly requested by the students, making it a fitting way to mark this significant milestone. It also served as a nostalgic flashback to Junior College when such events were eagerly anticipated, allowing the students to relive those moments before stepping into professional workplaces. The benefits of a comfortable clothes day are well-supported by research and experiences.

This highly anticipated day brought both a sense fun and comfort for the Year 12 students, offering them a meaningful pause in their busy schedules to appreciate how far they have come and to look forward to the exciting future that lies ahead.

We wish our Year 12s all the very best as they complete their internal assessments and prepare for mock examinations, held across Week 8 and Week 9 of this term.

Commencement of Interviews for 2025 College Leadership Positions

We are excited to share that interviews have commenced for the 2025 College Captains, Action Captains, and House Captains. The student applicants have been exceptional, showcasing their understanding of student leadership at Pacific, and their passion for growing pastoral care, co-curricular activities, environmental initiatives, and creating a vibrant spirit at our sporting events.

As students complete their interviews, we encourage them to feel a sense of pride in their journey so far as Pacific students. This is a time for reflection on the incredible progress they have made, and an opportunity to look ahead to the many exciting opportunities that await them as student leaders of the College in 2025.

We have been inspired by the confidence with which they have shared their initiatives and vision for the future. Their commitment to continuing the legacy of leadership at Pacific, collaborating with next year’s Year 9 and Year 6 leaders, and supporting the development of peer mentoring within our pastoral care groups from Years 7-12, speaks volumes about the strength and calibre of leadership capacity amongst the current Year 11 cohort.

We wish all 2025 Year 11 students the very best with their leadership applications. We are proud of their efforts and look forward to the positive impact they will undoubtedly have on our College.

NAPLAN student results are available in Term 3

Parents and carers of students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 who took this year’s NAPLAN assessment in March will receive an individual student report (ISR) of their child’s results from Pacific during Term 3.

Specific timing will be determined by the relevant state or territory test administration authority.

These reports provide useful information on a student’s results in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar, and punctuation), and numeracy.

Individual student NAPLAN results are reported against proficiency standards. The standards are set at a challenging but reasonable expectation of what students know and can do at the time of testing.  There are 4 levels of proficiency, which provide parents and carers with clear information on their child’s achievement:

•  Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.

•  Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.

•  Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.

• Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.

The front page of the ISR provides general information about the tests and an explanation of how to read the report. The student’s results in each of the assessment areas are set out in the middle pages of the report. The final page of the ISR provides a brief summary of the skills typically demonstrated by students at each of the proficiency levels.

Along with other school assessment reports, parents and carers can use the NAPLAN individual student reports to discuss their child’s progress with their teacher.

For more information:

• Visit our NAP website at www.nap.edu.au/naplan/results-and-reports

• Read our parents and carers information guide on ISRs at https://nap.edu.au/docs/default-source/naplan/isr-parent-carer-faq.pdf  – it’s also available in other languages on the NAP website.

Food for Thought

Focusing on Strengths: A Path to Positive Growth for Your Child

As parents, our natural instinct is to help our children overcome their challenges and improve their weaknesses. While this is undoubtedly important, recent research suggests that a more effective approach might be to focus on what they do best. Emphasising student strengths can foster a more positive self-image and boost overall achievement. When children recognize and build upon their strengths, they often experience increased confidence and motivation. For instance, if a child excels in creative activities, nurturing this talent can provide a sense of accomplishment and enthusiasm for learning. This positive reinforcement not only improves their self-esteem but also encourages a growth mindset, where they are more willing to embrace new challenges and learn from their experiences.

Conversely, an overemphasis on weaknesses can sometimes lead to frustration and a sense of inadequacy. If children perceive that their efforts are only valued when they correct deficiencies, they may become disengaged or anxious. By shifting the focus to their unique talents and abilities, parents can help children see themselves as capable and valued, fostering resilience and a more balanced perspective on their overall development. Supporting your child’s strengths doesn’t mean ignoring areas where they need improvement. Rather, it’s about creating a nurturing environment where their abilities can shine and where they are encouraged to leverage their skills in a way that complements their growth. This can involve engaging together in activities that highlight their strengths, celebrate their achievements, and provide opportunities for them to explore and expand their talents.

In summary, helping our children build on their strengths can lead to a more fulfilling and positive learning experience. By focusing on what they do well, parents can help their children develop confidence, motivation, and a balanced view of their abilities.

Be kind to yourself – you are amazing!

Support Jessica Cronin’s Community Problem Solving Initiative

Jessica Cronin, Year 8 student, is participating in the 2024 Community Problem Solving Competition by raising awareness for the UN's Global Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal Number 4: Quality Education. As part of her project, Jessica reached out to the Caloundra RSL Club to help her raise funds for the Australian Lutheran World Service. Her goal is to donate money to support students in Africa by building a school garden and providing kits for disabled students to attend school. We are thrilled that the Caloundra RSL Club has offered to organize and run a raffle for Jessica, with all profits going to her cause. The raffle will take place on Friday 9th August at 4:15 PM at the Caloundra RSL Club. It would be wonderful to connect as a community at the Caloundra RSL this Friday afternoon to support Jessica and her incredible drive and courage towards service learning.

Library News

Visiting Authors

The library was buzzing this week with visits from two award-winning authors. On Tuesday, students in Years 4-6 met author, Samantha Wheeler, who writes middle grade adventure novels with an environmental theme. She is known for her best-selling novel Everything I’ve Never Said based on her daughter’s experience with Rett syndrome. Samantha was highly engaging and her books went flying off the shelves afterwards.

On Wednesday, it was our Kindy to Year 3 students’ turn to see picture book author, illustrator and performer Gregg Dreise. Gregg had students laughing, singing and dancing as he shared stories related to his indigenous heritage and played the digeridoo. Both authors encouraged students to keep reading. Author visits are a great way for students to connect with stories and see the people behind the books, which is why the PLC Library organizes these events.

LET’S GET EXCITED FOR NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK, 12th -16th AUGUST (WEEK 6)

This year, Pacific Lutheran College will take part in the Nature Quest Adventure, an inclusive event spanning five lunchtimes in Week 6, involving all students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Taking place in the library as the central hub, this immersive experience combines a scavenger hunt and bird feeder making activity, which will ignite excitement and unity among students.

Students will embark on a thrilling journey through diverse ecosystems within the College grounds. The scavenger hunt will challenge student’s knowledge of nature as they uncover hidden images or facts about various species. Each discovery will be accompanied by a riddle or puzzle, enhancing critical thinking skills and teamwork. From the jungle's roar to the flutter of wings, every clue will deepen their understanding of the natural world.

Following the hunt, students will then transition to the bird feeder workshop, engaging in hands-on learning. Using simple materials, they will craft feeders, learning about habitat provision. As feeders are hung up, students will eagerly await feathered visitors, witnessing the impact of their conservation efforts.

The Nature Quest Adventure fosters environmental stewardship and appreciation for life's interconnectedness, for students of all ages. It will leave a lasting impact on the College community, inspiring a love for nature and conservation.

Rugby:

Last night we hosted Sunshine Coast Grammar School on our on home soil, a first for girls rugby! Congratulations on both our girls teams who played with good competitive spirit! Our U14 Blue team put on a dominant performance against Grammar, defeating them 15 – 7, continuing to build on their defensive efforts from previous weeks. Our Blue and Gold team had the opportunity to compete against each other, with both teams showcasing some good rugby and representing PLC exceptionally. Finally, our PLC Gold team had the opportunity to play Grammar, unfortunately going down with a loss, however it is pleasing to see the girls continue to improve week in, week out and should be proud of the continued grit they are showing on the footy field. Thanks again to the solid support of parents and teachers cheering the girls on.

Congratulations to Senior A Girls, Intermediate A Boys, Intermediate A Girls, Intermediate B1 Girls, Junior A Boys and Junior A Girls for their commanding wins. The Intermediate B2 Girls and Junior B2 Boys went down in nail-biting games and both teams should be proud of their efforts to stay in the game. Special mention also goes to the Senior A Girls, Intermediate A Boys, Junior A Boys and Intermediate B1 Girls for holding spots in the top two places on the ladder at the half way mark of the season. There is still plenty of touch football to come and it is great to see our groups playing so well. Thank you again to all the coaches who give up their time to work with our students every Wednesday night!

Basketball:

Well done to our Senior A Boys and Senior D Boys for their wins on Friday night. The Senior A Boys competed in a double header and went down in their second game by just two points. Our A Boys are sitting just outside of the top four and have some tough games coming up. The Senior D Boys keep going from strength to strength and are yet to drop a game. The Senior A, Senior D Girls and Senior F Boys all had a week off to recharge and we wish them all the best in their fixtures this week.

Parents and students are encouraged to double check fixtures on the competition link as sometimes there are late changes that aren’t advised to us. We will always do our best to update Clipboard and email parents once we find out about changes.

MATCH REPORT U9 ANGELFISH

U9 Pacific Angelfish – 2 vs Currimundi Angelfish

On Saturday, we saw double with all the Angelfish taking to the field at PLC, Coach Kyle called it the “Battle of the Angelfish”. If you thought fish could only make waves in water, think again! In a sparkling display of athleticism and camaraderie, the Angelfish teams clashed on the field in a match that had fans swimming with excitement. Pacific Angelfish showed strength and determination which was evident when securing the first goal of the match. The opposition responded with relentless energy, dazzling the crowd with their quick passes and flawless footwork. It was a flurry of activity that had the crowds on the edge of their seats.  As the final whistle blew, the scoreboard showed a thrilling 2-2 tie, but if you ask anyone watching from the sidelines, the real winners were the fans. Both Angelfish teams had put on a performance worthy of the ocean’s depths, showcasing skill, determination, and a touch of aquatic magic. In the end, the match was more than just a game – it was a celebration of sportsmanship and teamwork, and as the teams shook hands, the camaraderie was as clear as the sea on a sunny day. Worship @ St Mark’s

Sharing a common mission and ministry with Pacific Lutheran College

“Growing in faith and sharing God’s love with others”

Weekly worship services are held at 14 Bombala Terrace Caloundra at 9.00am. We are thankful that we can meet together each week for worship. As we do this, there are still physical distancing, and hygiene requirements we need to follow to ensure the health and safety of everyone in our community.

Our worship services are intergenerational with a blend of traditional and contemporary.

You’re welcome to follow us on Facebook and visit our Church webpage.

All are welcome at any of our services.

Pastor Ray Morris, St Mark’s Lutheran Church (0429 856 532 or lutherancaloundra@gmail.com)
